The Crafting Chicks are excited to have some new opportunities to work with a few different brands. So here and there we will have posts highlighting different products/brands that we have tried or that we have been asked to work with. It is fun to try new things and also represent some of the products we like, and we hope it will be fun for you to see projects and ideas we come up with.
So with that being said, let’s have a drum roll…bllblblllbllllbllldlpppdpdppdlllllblsllllllllll…..introducing three fun recipes/crafts using Morton Salt—the salt with the really darling vintage girl holding an umbrella….is it just me or is her dress really cute? Here are some great After School Fun Activities :
{Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag: Morton Ice Cream Salt}
by Crafting Chick Brooke and kids
Brooke: When I saw that Morton Salt has an “Ice Cream Salt” product, my kids and I quickly decided that homemade ice cream was the perfect treat on a hot summer day (or for an after-school snack!). I got the recipe from Family Fun online and grabbed all the right ingredients.
{Ingredients for Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag using Morton Ice Cream Salt:}
(This recipe is for an individual serving)
- 1 gallon ziplock bag
- 1 quart ziplock bag
- 2 Tablespoons sugar
- 1 cup half and half
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 1/2 cup Morton’s Ice Cream Salt (rock salt or kosher salt would also work)
- lots of ice cubes (to fill the gallon bags halfway)
{Instructions for Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag:}
Add the sugar, half and half, and vanilla into a quart-size ziplock bag and seal it tightly. Mix up the ingredients by carefully smooshing the bag around.
Place the salt and ice cubes in the gallon-size ziplock bag, then place the sealed ice cream mixture bag into the gallon bag. Seal the larger bag tightly.
Shake the bags around until you can feel the ice cream mixture harden. It takes between 5-10 minutes of shaking the ice cubes and ice cream around.
Remove the smaller bag from the larger bag, add any mix-ins if you like, and smoosh it to mix it all together. It has a soft-serve consistency.
Then eat the yummy homemade ice cream right out of the bag! Or pour into a cute little ice cream dish, you decide. 🙂
Either way, I had two HAPPY KIDS with their very own homemade ice cream. I snuck a few bites and it really tasted delicious!
This recipe came together very quickly and easily. My kids had fun making their own individual ice cream. Next time I would add fresh raspberries or any other fruit, or mint chips, or smashed up Oreos, anything your little tummy wants! Or even cocoa for some chocolate ice cream. You could also use one of those #10 cans, put the ice cubs and Morton’s Ice Cream Salt inside with the sealed ice cream mixture, and roll or kick it around. My kids would dig that.
Have fun making your own homemade ice cream in a bag, and be sure to pick up Morton’s Ice Cream Salt—it’s perfect for this recipe!
{THE BEST EVER Homemade Playdough Recipe}
by Crafting Chick Kirsten and kids
Kirsten: This is my favorite recipe for HOMEMADE PLAYDOUGH. I got this recipe a couple of years ago from my friend Shannon who made it for the preschool our children both attended. This dough doesn’t dry out easily, has a nice soft texture, and can be made in less that 10 minutes. I HAD to make a can to hold it in because my mom used to give them away personalized cans of homemade dough when I was little. Thanks mom for the idea! The can for holding the dough can be made quickly by getting a Stephen’s Hot Cocoa container, or other comparable container, and covering it with your favorite scrapbook paper. I added the “Benny’s Playdough” label, designed on Photoshop CS2 to personalize it a little bit, we’re all about personalizing here at The Crafting Chicks ;).
So here’s the recipe:
{HOMEMADE PLAYDOUGH}
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 cup regular Morton salt
- 2 pkg unsweetened Koolaid
- 2 TB Cream of Tarter
- 2 TB Vegetable Oil
- 2 cups water
Instructions for Playdough: In a large pot, combine all the dry ingredients. Mix well. Add the oil and water. Stir over medium until the mixture is firm and hard to stir. (the mixture changes consistently as it cooks) Do not over cook. Dump out of pan on lightly floured surface. When cool, knead until smooth and pliable. Store in air-tight container. Refrigerate. My kids always love making playdough, give it a try :).
{Salt Glitter Art}
By Crafting Chick Jamie & Kids
I LOVE salt glitter. I learned to make this when I taught first grade and had to try it out with my kids! They loved it! I have to say I am not a fan of glitter. I love how it looks but it is such a mess. This salt glitter is much easier to clean up and seems to not get everywhere like regular sparkly glitter.
{Salt Glitter Supplies}
- Morton Salt
- Food Coloring
- Paper
- Glue
Steps to make Salt Glitter:
First combine a few tablespoons salt of with a few drops of food coloring of your choice. Mix together with a spoon until the salt is evenly colored. (Let the little ones do this-they’ll love it!)
Next, spread the colored salt on a baking sheet lined with tin foil and bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees.
Use your glue to draw a picture or write a word. My kids have been learning how to spell their names and so we used their names for our glitter art. Then sprinkle on the salt glitter.
And your very proud little ones will have a great masterpiece to display! You can store the leftover salt glitter in containers to use again and again! So there you have it friends: go buy some Morton Salt today and craft up a storm….wink 😉

Morton Salt provided money to purchase the supplies to make these projects; with that being said, our opinions are completely our own 🙂 Thanks for stopping by.

Who would have thought SALT could be sooooo useful!! I’m super excited to try all of these cool ideas with my girls! Being that it’s been so hot lately, Ice Cream will be first on the list!! Thanks for sharing.
Kirsten says
Ice cream is next on my list as well!
Shannon says
Thanks SO much for the Playdough recipe! I will be making this with my kids for sure!

I have used the play dough recipe for years but I microwave it. Just heat for 30 seconds at a time and stir in between. It works great. I have also layered the play dough recipe into a gift jar. Make a cute tag with instructions and add a home made kid sized apron, a couple of cookie cutters and a fun, cheap kids gift!
