Old Glory

As much as I would love a beautiful mantle to decorate, well, I just plain don’t have one. Instead I have a trusty shelf that gets changed out with the seasons. You may remember seeing it all decked out for Halloween. A couple years ago I painted a flag onto an old window, kind of like this one on U-Create, and I loved it! Unfortunately, last year it took a fall off the shelf and much like Humpty Dumpty couldn’t be put back together. In fact, I think I finally removed the last piece of glass from the carpet.

I loved the flag window so much, but there was no way I was going to relive that broken disaster. As I was trying to figure out what was missing on my shelf (the flag!) I remembered my love of mixed media art, pulled out the supplies and soon had a new flag. The best part about this one is that it is unbreakable! No matter how many times it tumbles there will be no shattering! I used a 16×20″ canvas, and used pages from a book, scrapbook paper, paint, Mod Podge, rub-ons, stamps, and what ever else I could find to add interesting texture to my flag.

If you’re looking to add that last little something to your decor you can download it here. It is sized at 11×14, so a little smaller than the original, but still big enough to make an impact. Either print and frame, or if you are feeling daring order it as a canvas from Canvas People. Print it for free as an 8×10″ or upgrade to 11×14″ for just $14.99. You won’t have it in time for the 4th–but who says that party stops then? There’s still a lot of July left and you’ll have it for next year too!

Thank you so much for sharing. It is just what my shelf is missing – and I think I will try uploading it to canvas people :)

Ah, I love those stars! My mom made them for me about 10 years ago–wish I had an easier answer for you, but that’s where they came from. There’s also a middle sized one in red to complete my red, white and blue.

Ditto to Katie’s question I love the stars! I’m calculating in my head on how to make them myself, but timewise I would love to buy them instead!

Yes, please share more about those stars!! (I’m trying to figure out how to make them, but I think it would take more time and talent than I have to give, and they wouldn’t be as cute anyway.)
