Home Depot Blogger Network: Decking the Hall

Want to know a little secret?

Not every house has a beautiful mantle decorated for Christmas. sshhhh….I know right? They seem to be everywhere and everyone seems to have one, but our house is very lacking in the mantle department. I almost convinced the husband to help me build a faux fireplace just so I could have the mantle. But luckily for him, I came to my senses when I realized we don’t have a spot one would work in and took to decorating our stair area instead.

I love what Home Depot’s Director of Trends and Design, Sarah Fishburne says, “Find the designer within and deck more than just the halls. Start with the front door and go from room to room, adding a wreath here and some garland there.” And that’s exactly what I did! We’ve lived here for a little over a year, and this entire section of house has been left empty. I knew I wanted to do something fun on the half wall, and knew the large frame and print would add a little excitement to this area.

I used window moulding, Rustoleum Satin spray paint in red, 2′ x 4′ hard board (masonite), and a staple gun to make make the framed art on the half wall. The black and white print is made using Rhonna Designs Insta-Christmas font and was printed as a blue print.

I can’t get over the richness of this black and love it paired with the red and bright white. That may just be my new Christmas color combination. Rhonna Farrer

The garland is Martha Stewart Living Winterberry 6 ft. Red Poinsettia Garland with Red Berries and Pinecones. The poinsettias were a little much, so I took them out, and love the texture the berries and pinecones add.  The plan was to put Clear Garland Lights with the garland, but we don’t have an outlet anywhere in the vicinity to plug them in to so they were nixed. We have a whole slew of 3M Commands strips and hangers hanging everything up. You can’t beat them for easy of hanging and taking down.

To make the J and Y I spent a while scrolling through my fonts looking for letters that I liked, but that would be doable to cut with a jigsaw. No tight curly-cues allowed! I printed them out, taped them together, and traced on the board. Then my husband wielded the jigsaw and cut them out for me. After a quick sanding I glued pieces of 2″x4″ onto the back to give them a little dimension. And I braved the cold to give them a quick spray of red.

The wreath was made by simply hot gluing coffee filters onto a wreath form. A Command hook is holding the wreath and the letters have Command strips keeping them up.

Our stockings are now hung over the stairs with care!

So cute! I’m curious how you hang everything up with the 3M strips without the tabs showing. I love using them but on a lot of things if I use them the tabs show and if I hide the tabs, then I can’t get to them to pull them off at the end of the season. Any suggestions?

I have the tabs pointed down on everything. They are at the top of the letters, under the garland, under the stockings and under the Merry Christmas sign. The tabs come in all different sizes, so I try to use the smallest size for the weight/size I’m hanging.

Great idea!! We do not have a mantle and have been wrecking my brain as to how to hang stockings this year! Last year we used the staircase and this year we just used the bar to hang them. If I have time this year, I will try this if not look out next year:) Thanks for the tips!
