DIY Jewelry Dish

I’m always racking my brain trying to think up fun creative gift ideas, especially for Mother’s Day.  I was trying to think of all the things that I would love and decided I really needed a Jewelry dish.  I decided that my mom would love a DIY Jewelry Dish that my girls made for her.  What a fun keepsake this would be.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Polymer clay
  • tin foil or wax paper
  • butter knife
  • rolling pin
  • oven safe bowl

To get my little helpers started we washed our hands and made sure our work surface was clean.  Place a sheet of tin foil or wax paper under each set of hands.

I let my girls each choose 2 colors, and we cut them in half, leaving the other half for another project.

Knead-Clay-for-DIY-Jewlery-Dish

The clay can be pretty hard so you’ll need to knead it out lots.  My helpers were pretty good when the clay wasn’t as rough, but some of the clay did require a little more adult help.

Once they had the clay in a more pliable state, we were ready to roll each piece into a snake.  The fun is starting.

We took each snake piece and started to coil it.  Then connected the next color as we continued wrapping.

My girls had so much fun with this.

Then I took the rolling pin and flatted it all out.

Now you could be a perfectionist at this part and make sure it’s even everywhere, but I wanted this to show that my girls made it.  The imperfect is perfect to me.

Take the flatted clay and lay over an oven safe bowl.

I also placed the bowl on a cookie sheet so it was easier to move.

You’ll bake this at 275 degrees F (130 C) for 30 minutes per 1/4″ of thickness.  I think I cooked mine for about 40 just for good measure.  Follow directions on the clay packaging.

Once you take it out of the oven, you’ll want to remove it from off the bowl.  It can start to stick if you let it cool on there too long.

Throw some jewelry in there and you are all set.

DIY Photo Mat and Free Easter Printable

featuredimage

I love a good holiday printable…who doesn’t? It’s such an easy way to add holiday decor into your home. This super easy DIY photo mat and Easter printable was perfect for my entryway. Here’s what I did… First, I needed a frame. I found a simple black one at the dollar store and spray painted it gold. To make the mat I used a piece of regular cardboard. You’ll want to make sure that whatever you use won’t be too thick to fit back into your frame when it’s all done. You might need to use something that’s not quite so thick, like a gift box, cereal box, or even a piece of cardstock. I used a plain photo mat that I already had as a stencil.  I traced it onto the cardboard and cut it out using a razor knife. I used scrapbook paper to cover mine. Wrapping paper would work great, too! I would have used Mod Podge to [Read More…]

And they wash up so nice which is great cause my girls don’t like to take them off. Here’s what we did to celebrate with fellow princesses. Here’s a view of us setting up.  I love these Kraft Party Fans from My Mind’s Eye.  They always make the perfect backdrop. We used a little table that is just the perfect princess size and covered it with a fancy table cloth.  Added some tulips for that spring touch. Every party needs some fancy chalkboard art.  I love this little chalkboard easel from Michaels. Then we had mini sugar cookies with princess sprinkles on them. These were a BIG hit. One of my favorite things were these adorable chocolate tea [Read More…]

PB Inspired Silver Egg Stands

PB Inspired Egg Stand

Hello friends! I’m SO thrilled to be back hanging out with you and the Crafting Chicks again! Easter is a big deal here in the Dolen household and I couldn’t wait to get started on my first Easter project of the year! I spied some Mercury Glass Egg Stands in the Pottery Barn catalog and thought they were super cute & fun! I decided to make my own PB Inspired Silver Egg Stands. To make your own PB Inspired Silver Egg Stands you’ll need: wooden egg wooden candle stick epoxy spray paint {I used silver metallic and mirror finish} This piece didn’t allow the egg to sit flat on top of the the candle stick. I took a screw driver and lifted up the edges… then folded the edges down into itself. I made sure I had all the stickers and tags peeled off the eggs and candle sticks before I squeezed out the expoy. Then I mixed the two gels together. [Read More…]

Carrot-Coconut Cupcakes

carrot_coconut_cupcake1

Many years ago while we were on vacation in Victoria, British Columbia we stayed at the charming Abigail’s Hotel. Abigail’s is famous for its dynamic three-course breakfasts. And they did not disappoint. When we got home I set out on a quest to find any recipe from Abigail’s that I could and came across these Carrot-Coconut Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting. Even though we didn’t try these during our stay, I knew anything from Abigail’s would be delicious. In the last 10 years these have become my husband’s most favorite dessert. They are like carrot cake on steroids. Besides carrots and coconut like the name says, they also have crushed pineapple and chopped pecans baked inside.   Unfrosted, they make excellent muffins.   But add the special cream cheese frosting, which also has a couple surprise ingredients, like white chocolate and lemon zest and you’ve got a moist and delicious cupcake brought to life with the hint of citrus in [Read More…]
