I used Heidi Swapp’s patterned paper and added red and blue foil to the 12×12 paper.

Then I cut each paper into 4 inch strips.  At the bottom I cut out a triangle to make a pennant shape.

We glued these flags around wooden sticks and added silver sparkly stars!  My kids are excited to wave these cute festive flags on the 4th.  Happy Birthday USA!

Paper Fireworks Materials Paper Fireworks Free Printable Colors/Scissors/Tape Streamers (I used a small strip of Oly-Fun) Straw Step One. Print out the Paper Fireworks Free Printable on regular printer paper. I made most of the designs somewhat generic just in case you want to make these all Summer long. Also included a blank one just in case any of your kids really want to customize it! Step Two. Have your kids color in the designs they want. As I mentioned above, I left the majority of the printable neutral enough to use year round! Step Three. DIY Paper Camera for Kids

As many of you know we are honored to work with Michaels as part of the Michaels Makers. Michaels is offering a kids’ summer crafting program, Passport to Imagination, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 am – noon from June 14-July 31 at every Michaels location across the U.S.  Passport to Imagination takes kids on an imaginary seven-week summer road trip from the beach to main street and more! We were excited to join in celebrating Main Street Week. Main Street USA reminds me of fun street shops and great photo opportunities with family.  My girls are always wanting to take pictures and would love to have a camera of their own.  I decided to make DIY Paper Cameras with them and we even added some pictures that they could stick inside so it feels like they are taking real pictures.   To start you will need to download a Paper Camera Template. I found this template online but could never find a source. I pulled it into Photoshop and [Read More…]

Wooden Stars

This post is sponsored by Macmillan. Post may contain affiliate links. A few years ago these wooden stars appeared in my Old Glory post and many people asked where they came from. Inspired by the upcoming 4th of July holiday and my latest read, Blueprints, about a mother-daughter carpenter pair, I decided to share a tutorial for them. My mom had made them for me many years ago and I didn’t have a pattern for them. But with the help of my math genius husband, it took a while to figure all of the angles out, we have the instructions for you today! You’ll need a length of 1×3″ pine to begin with. Using a compound miter saw cut them to the lengths and angles below. I drew a picture because I knew there was no way I could explain the lengths and angles just by using words. Use a brad nailer to nail them together. Here’s a tricky angle. [Read More…]

Fancy Lemonade Stand

sm lemonade stand 2

Sharing inspiration for a fancy summertime lemonade stand.  Each summer…my kids love to set up a lemonade stand.  This year my girls want to donate to a local children’s hospital…and that makes my heart happy.  So in preparation for the big day…we made the cutest, fanciest lemonade stand decor, with the help from Heidi Swapp’s Minc machine.  The gold, teal, and pink foil make it pop, and so pretty! Below are details of how we decorated our stand! I used these Letters from Heidi Swapp.   They are ready to go…just add the foil.  Here is a tutorial on how you use the machine that we posted last month.  I ran the letters through the machine with teal, pink and gold foil.  I taped each letter to a string of yellow and white twine to make the word “LEMONADE.” I printed (on a laser printer), two signs…one for the treats, and one for the lemonade.  I added gold and teal [Read More…]

Patriotic Popcorn Favors

Patriotic Popcorn Favors - featured image on www.thecraftingchicks.com

Patriotic Popcorn Favors – homemade popcorn recipe served in red, white and blue containers.  Great for parties or just a movie night with the family. Hello there!  It’s Katie from The Casual Craftlete.  I can’t believe we are already in the swing of summer!  Today I am sharing these adorable Patriotic Popcorn Favors.  I just love making my own popcorn at home.  The flavors are amazing and it is super simple to make.  Plus, homemade popcorn is much better for you.  Store bought popcorn often use unhealthy fat and is loaded with sodium.  This homemade popcorn has just three ingredients and you know exactly what is in the popcorn.  I thought it would be fun to put homemade popcorn into cute red, white and blue patriotic favors.  It’s a fun surprise for family and friends when they come over to celebrate the holidays and summertime. Let’s make the favors first. What you’ll need to make the favors: Fry box Washi tape Star cork [Read More…]
