Hey there! I’m Sydney from Tastefully Frugal and I am so excited to be here today sharing one of my (and my boys’) favorite treats. I didn’t really realize it until I had kids and found it much harder to lose that extra ten pounds; but it seems like the winter holidays are all centered around food. Ok, maybe not centered around it, but doesn’t it seem like Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day are all filled with warm, delicious, not-so-healthy-for-you foods? No wonder by the time spring comes I have to kick my work-out plan up a notch; the last five months have been spent indulging in a long line of sweet treats.
This year I knew I wanted to make a few healthier choices for myself, and my family. The only way to not eat candy and chocolate is to not have those things in the house. You see, I have no will power when it comes to sweets. If there is candy in the house, I’m like a hound dog, I can sniff it out in a heartbeat! My boys can too; must run in the family. Valentine’s Day is one of those holidays where I like to create lots of fun and colorful treats. We also have our annual cookie decorating party where we invite friends and family over to decorate cookies, play and hand out Valentine’s. No way getting around the extra calories in those sugar cookies this year, but I can hand out healthy Valentines.
If your kids are anything like mine, the second those Cuties (or Halos, or Buddies) hit the counter, the bag is ripped open and a good portion of them are gone within minutes. They are a healthy treat, and we can use all the Vitamin C we can get this time of year, so I’m not too concerned about them getting gobbled up. Geez, I’m making my family sound like a bunch of wild animals! When I was thinking about what to make for the boys’ Valentines this year those Cuties were one of the first things that came to mind. Not only are they good for you but they are also so easy to put together; put one in a treat bag and tie a little tag around it. Easy Peasy. I’ve even included FREE printable tags for you to use!

A strange irony that the months we are more sedentary contain the holidays that pack in the calories! Love this idea! My son is obsessed with clementines–I might even find a way to incorporate the song:)

I know, right Nikki?! I think this is the start of a new tradition of healthy treats for the winter holidays in our family. I would love to see what you come up with!

Thanks Christy! I’m glad my boys are excited about fruit, more than they are about candy. One less thing for this mama to stress about.
