This  Homemade Cranberry Sauce is easy to make with just a few ingredients and one pot!  With a quick recipe like this one, make sure it ends up on your holiday table this year instead of the canned preserves.

Homemade Cranberry Sauce by TheCasualCraftlete.com for TheCraftingChicks.com

Hello there!  It’s Katie from The Casual Craftlete blog.  Today I am sharing a super simple recipe for Homemade Cranberry Sauce.  This recipe tastes so amazing and is a must have side dish this holiday season.  It is made with a few wholesome ingredients that turn up the flavor on traditional canned cranberry sauce.  It goes great with turkey, rolls, mashed potatoes, or by itself.

Easy to make Cranberry Sauce

Growing up as a kid the only kind of cranberries that made an appearance on our holiday table were out of a can.  I never ate it probably because it didn’t taste good and it wasn’t real food.  Whole cranberries are very easy to find in local grocery stores these days.  They are usually located in the produce section and are available all season long.  Also, you can buy a bag of cranberries and always freeze them until you need to use them.  I bought two bags this year, one to make this homemade cranberry sauce and the other bag is for a future smoothie recipe.

Easy homemade cranberry sauce

Other than the cranberries, you probably already have the rest of the ingredients at home.  For my homemade cranberry sauce I used:  1 – 12 oz bag of fresh cranberries, 1/2 cup of water, 1 cup honey, 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice and the zest from one orange, 1/2 tablespoon of ground ginger, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.  Other than those super simple and fresh ingredients, you just need one pot.  How awesome this that?!  In a large pot, over medium heat, combine all the ingredients.  Bring to a boil and reduce heat to medium low, stir occasionally and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes or until the liquid has evaporated.  Transfer to a separate bowl and refrigerate for at least 6 hours or overnight.  This is a fantastic recipe to make the night before, saving you time.  This homemade cranberry sauce should make appropriately 2 1/2 cups.

Easy Homemade Cranberry Sauce with fresh all natural ingredients

This homemade cranberry sauce is served best cold and paired with your favorite holiday foods like turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing and broccoli cheese rice casserole.

Peppermint Egg Nog Punch is the perfect holiday party drink! Peppermint Eggnog Punch

I am so excited to be part of this fun “Deck the Halls” series here at The Crafting Chicks. I am Leigh Anne and you can find me over at Your Homebased Mom where I love sharing everything pretty & delicious!

Music has always been an important part of my life. I grew up with a father who was a singer and directed lots of different choirs and choruses through work and church. I am also lucky enough to have some very musical children so there has always been lots of music around our house. And of course at Christmas time, there are always Christmas Carols – lots of them!

Like many of you we especially enjoy singing Christmas Carols on Christmas Eve. Now that my kids are grown and gone from home I think Christmas Eve may be the only time of year my piano gets used. I got a little crazy last year and actually painted my piano! You can check it out here. After our traditional Christmas Eve fondue dinner and then acting out of the nativity, we gather around the piano for some Christmas Carols. I am the piano player.

We can get a little silly at times and it never fails but that one of the carols we like to sing is “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.”

Peppermint Eggnog Punch

It is fun to sing because Grandma is usually with us on Christmas Eve and the grandkids think it’s fun to sing about Grandma “drinking too much egg nog and getting run over by a reindeer walking home from our house Christmas Eve…” Pretty silly but we love it.

Peppermint Eggnog Punch

So besides singing silly Christmas songs another family tradition is that we have egg nog punch every Christmas Eve! So I guess it’s my fault Grandma got run over by a reindeer – I served her egg nog punch

Peppermint Eggnog Punch

But don’t worry, this eggnog punch is totally safe. No alcohol involved. Just eggnog, peppermint ice cream and lemon lime soda!

Peppermint Eggnog Punch

So if you are worried about Grandma getting home safe and sound on Christmas Eve, maybe you better not serve her Peppermint Eggnog Punch. Save it all for yourself!

We also love to play fun games on Christmas Eve and you can check out all the past Minute to Win It Games we have played over the years – Christmas Minute to Win It, More Christmas Minute to Win it, Even More Christmas Minute to Win It.

Besides my blog, you can find me on Facebook, Instagram and SnapChat at Homebasedmom.

Combining activities and food with our kids favorite stories, is a great way to experience them together.   At Super Healthy Kids, our focus is on making fruits and vegetables simple, fun and delicious, so we decided to create an activity and snack based on the fairy tale, Jack and the Beanstalk! What a great way to make green beans come to life for kids.

Jack and the Beanstalk

Step 1) Read the story

The story of Jack and the Beanstalk starts off with a hungry family whose cow stopped giving them milk. When Jack went to sell the cow, he was offered some magic beans instead of money. He accepted the trade, and brought the beans home. The mother was mad, and threw the beans onto the ground and Jack went to bed.   That night, the beanstalk grew up into the sky.

Jack-and-the-beanstalk-book

Step 2) Plant your own green beans

planting-green-beans

What a marvelous lesson this is about planting seeds or beans. Seeds truly are magical. Although when planted, they don’t grow overnight, they do get so much bigger and taller than their original size.

You can start this in a pot in the window sill, or if it is spring or summer, use and outdoor spot for your beans.

green-bean-seeds

Observe the seeds with your kids. Notice the hard shell. Set some aside so the kids can compare the seeds to the plant after it’s sprouted.

pot-for-green-beans

Push the seeds just below the surface of the soil, and keep it watered.

Step 3) Eat the harvest

Another reason beans are magical is because they also grow children! We call veggies in our house, our “growing food”. Green beans in particular are a good source of calcium, vitamin B1 , potassium, and even protein.

One way we like to eat green beans is like French Fries. Add a little breading to the green beans and bake them. This way we can eat them with our fingers.

Green-Bean-French-Fries

Green Bean Sticks

  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 lb of green beans

Mix the buttermilk with the egg, and soaked the green beans in the mixture for about 10 minutes in the fridge (hoping for a little extra sticking power).   Arrange the green beans on a pan, lined with foil and sprayed with cooking spray (foil not necessary). Sprinkle the beans with salt and panko crumbs. Place in oven at 400 degrees for about 10-15 minutes, or until panko starts to get golden brown.

What a fun way to make this story come to life!

  • Free Flavored Milk Printables (available HERE)

milk and cookies gift 4

Directions:

  1. Make or purchase your favorite cookies. (We LOVE these Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies!) Wrap your cookies in cute baking sleeves or in plastic baggies.
  2. Mix your milk. I usually add 1 tsp. of mix per every 8oz of milk. Depending on how strong of a vanilla flavor you like, you can add more or less. Pour your milk into the glass milk jug, then add a Milk Tag with some bakers twine or ribbon so your friends know this isn’t just some ordinary milk!
  3. Place your milk jug and cookies in a basket or heavy-duty gift bag and get ready to make your neighbors smile!
