When we were kids we both had wooden lacing toys that were various shapes. Bettijo really only remembers the pony one because it was her favorite, and as a kids we just thought these toys were a lot of fun.  As Moms now we can appreciate that lacing toys encourage little ones to exercise fine motor skills and they are a great way to practice patterns.
