{Decking the Halls with the Kids-Homemade ornaments for the kids}
Kids make holidays so much fun! They love to be apart of all of the action whether it is baking, decorating, or just anything! I sometimes forget this and don’t include the little ones in my crafting…so this year I decided to let them decorate their own little playroom tree. I came up with a few ideas for ornaments that they could make on their own and I was surprised at what a great job they did. We turned on Christmas music, made some hot cocoa and got our craftiness on.
#1: Button Snowflake Ornaments:
You will need:
4 popsicle sticks
a big bag of white buttons or colored (colored would be fun!)
white paint
hot glue gun and glue sticks
school glue
I had the sticks glued together first. You can do this by placing one on top of another in an X and gluing the center.
After they were glued together, I let the kids paint them white.
We let the snowflakes dry and then we added the buttons. I then put strips of glue on each stick and let the kids add the buttons. Let them dry overnight.
#2: Felt trees with ric rac and pom pom trim
LOVE felt, pom poms and ric rac especially for crafting with the kids.
I first had the triangles cut out and ready to go. I used two pieces of felt to make them more sturdy. I glued my ric rac loop in the middle of the two felt pieces so that we could hang it on the tree.
Then I let the kids use some tacky glue to glue down ric rac strips and sparkly pom poms.
#3 Candy Cane Pom Pom Ornaments:
First, cut shapes of candy canes out of felt. Super Easy! Next, let your child add some pom poms with tacky glue. And last, add a ric rac loop on top! These were there favorite and they look so cute on their little tree!
And there you have a very cute playroom tree!
{Side note: They really wanted to incorporate pipe cleaner-they love those little bendy strips. So…we rolled them around a pencil, pulled them apart a bit and added them to our tree as “icicles.” Those clever little ones!}
I just hung my little button snowflake on the tree last night that my daughter made me about 18 years ago. 🙂 My tree is adorned with many handmade ornaments the kids made over the years. Now that they are all practically grown, it’s even more special to me! – Karen
We are so making these tomorrow. The girls will LOVE it! Thanks Jamie!
This will be a great craft to do with the classroom kids as Parent Gifts next year! Gotta love the ever versatile popsicle stick!
A wreath made out of old guitar strings, and two Xmas trees that my daughter made in a sewing class. I need to use the pine cones I collected from my dog’s walk too! Maybe this weekend
