Paint Crackle Pumpkins

ceramic-pumpkins

This post is sponsored by Elmer’s. All opinions are my own.   Have you heard about Paint Crackle?  My mom was a big tole painter back in the day and I remember her using the technique.  I thought it might be fun to break it out for these little ceramic pumpkins I’ve had sitting around. Do you know what I discovered?  You don’t need expensive creams to get a paint crackle effect.  All you need is some Elmer’s Glue All. So here’s how I achieved my fun looking crackled pumpkins. First off paint your pumpkins with a base color that you want to show through.  I choose a Espresso from Americana. And after that paint dries, paint a layer of Elmer’s Glue All over top.   You can see the difference in the pumpkin coated in Elmer’s Glue vs.  the one that has just been painted.  Once the glue has dried add your top layer of paint.  Go light on [Read More...]

Fancy Pumpkin

gold-fancy-pumpkin

This post is in partnership with Michael’s #TrickYourPumpkin sweepstakes. All ideas and opinions are my own. Every year my extended family has this fun huge Halloween party.  There is a contest involved for the best pumpkin.  I have yet to win. I have some pretty clever cousins, aunts and uncles.  So when Micheal’s announced their #TrickYourPumpkin sweepstakes. I was excited to take part.  Now I know my pumpkin isn’t earth shattering, but I love it.  It’s fancy and gold and simple.  Here’s how you can make one too. First run to Michael’s and snag a pumpkin and this fun gold decoupage trim from the Martha Stewart line. There are all sorts of fun trims you could use, but I liked this fun fancy stuff. Take your trim and you could always start to hot glue it right off the bat, but I wanted to make sure everything was where I wanted it, so I start by taping the trim down.   Then [Read More...]

Halloween Book Banner

halloween-banner

I decided I needed some new Halloween decor this year. My mom found this old poetry book at my grandma’s house and I knew want I wanted to do with it.  It was to become a Spooky Halloween Book Banner! I found the pages that I wanted to use…some are spookier than others, like The Raven. Then I went into my Cricut Design Space and choose a few spooky Halloween images.  There’s a ton in there so it was lots of fun to find just what I was looking for. Then I gathered up my Halloween paper, most of which is from s-e-i, and got cutting on my Cricut Explore.   I had this cream lace hanging out in my craft supplies and used it to hang the pages from. I love the fun added touch it gives the banner.     Then I decided to attach the pages to the lace with staples.  You could go with whatever you [Read More...]

After all, we LOVE our readers!   It seems like everywhere I turn these days, someone I love and care about is struggling and going through trials.  And they are all different.  Some are physical while others are, mental or emotional.  Life is just hard sometimes. There are many things that ground me and the most important one is my faith in Jesus Christ.  That he is my redeemer and my savior. I found this quote, “Don’t let your faith dim in the storm of life.”  I then went to read the whole talk given by Bruce D. Porter titled, Beautiful Mornings. How to Paint a Designer Pillow

Painted-pillow-covers

I was given a Paint-a-pillow kit in exchange for my review.  All opinions are my own.   I love toss pillows. I think you can tell by the many versions on our site that we are fans of the added pop a pillow can bring to a room. So when Paint-A-Pillow asked if we wanted to try out their new system for creating pillows to match your decor and your style, I was excited.  I ordered up a couple pillows and paint options and gave it a go. First things first, I watched the very informative video to make sure I knew what I was doing.  Then I opened up the boxes and got all my supplies ready. Everything comes ready for you to start painting right away.  One suggestion I would make is to purchase the brush kit.  I didn’t realize when I choose my stencil that I would need an itty bitty brush, so I’m glad that I [Read More...]

Fall Porch Ideas for Small Porches

pumpkins-on-a-fall-porch

This post was sponsored by Michaels but all opinions are my own. I LOVE the fall.  Love the soup, love the smells, and love the beautiful colors of the season.  I have always wanted to decorate my porch for fall, but felt limited because my porch is on the small side. I decided that I needed something so I went to Michaels and shopped away and I’m in love with how everything turned out. The first thing I looked for was a new fall wreath.  They are on sale right now and there are TONS to choose from.  I loved this one with the fall colors, leaves, acorns and pinecones. I was excited to use my teal post. I love how it works with the orange of the pumpkins and the colors in the wreath.  This is on my porch year-round but I love the way it looks all dressed up for Autumn.  I just added some fake pumpkins and [Read More...]

Banana Sour Cream Cake

Banana-Cake

  I fully admit that I buy banana’s in bulk so that I can turn them into a tasty treat once they’ve gotten really ripe.  This last cake might be my favorite.  Could have something to do with the cream cheese frosting, and the way the sour cream makes the cake so super moist.  Plus I decided to use coconut oil instead of vegetable oil, which kicked the flavor up just a bit. I think I’m in love!   Print Banana Sour Cream Cake Ingredients1 package yellow cake mix 3 eggs 1 cup mashed bananas (I use 3) 1 cup sour cream 1/4 cup coconut oil (or reg vegetable oil) 1 package of cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup butter, softened 1 package (16 oz.) powdered sugar (about 4 cups)InstructionsPreheat your oven to 350 degrees F. So I feel pretty lucky to have these amazing people in my life.  They each make my life so much better! Each Monday night our little family gets together and we have Family Home Evening.  Through Pinterest I found a blog, A year of FHE, and Emilie has a lesson titled “Our Family.”  I loved the lesson and found that it was just what I had been searching for as a way to get and keep our family on track. As I was reading through the lesson, I found a list of Family goals and loved them. 1. Have family prayer every night and morning. 2. Teach children the gospel every week in family home evening. 3. Study the scriptures regularly as a family. 4. Do things together as a family, such [Read More...]

So once I heard of Novi, I had to share.     A security system that sends photos and alerts to your phone (no contracts, no monthly fees, inexpensive, and portable)! We are working with this awesome Kickstarter project and want to get the word out! If you want to feel safe and secure go visit the site.  They have done a lot of homework to get this product to be the perfect solution for any home, apartment or business.  I know I’m excited to get these installed in my home! You get in the park and hit some rides but the kids always want to check out a store just to “see” what’s there.  They beg for something and you either give in or tell them no.  And how do I tell this cute face no? I then painted each girl’s hand the same purple and they stamped them on.  I think it turned out really cute! Food Photography: The Easy Way

food photos10

When it comes to photographing food there is soooooo much to be said. Everything from lighting and shutter speed to staging and composition. Some photographers devote their entire work to food, like Michael Ray or Lou Manna. (*beware…you WILL be hungry by the time you finish looking at their photos!) But I like to take an easy, natural approach to food. If there is one thing you need to know about me it’s that I like to keep things simple. If something takes too much time, set up or clean-up, I tend to stay away. Could this be a form of laziness? Perhaps…but because I’m not a fan of elaborate set-up I’ve found quick, easy and stunning ways to do things. So let’s start. Food Photography Tip #1 The way to get natural looking pictures is to only use natural light. So turn off all of your overhead lights and only use what is coming in from the windows.  With that said let [Read More...]

Chicken Au Gratin Chowder

It’s still soup weather if you ask me.  I love making soups cause it’s a meal in a bowl.  Add in some homemade breadsticks and I’m in heaven. Here is another easy family favorite recipe.  I had a friend bring this after I had a baby and it is a winner.  I then took it to my sister after she had a baby and she loved it.  Now it is a go to dinner not just for my family but when I take meals to anyone.  Believe me, you’re gonna want to print this one and add it to your rotation.  Enjoy! Print Chicken Au Gratin Chowder Ingredients1 package Au Gratin Potatoes 1 small onion, chopped 2 cups hot water 1/14 cup chicken broth 1 can corn, drained 6 bacon strips cooked and crumbled (I use the real bacon bits) 1 1/2 cups of milk 3 cups cooked, cubed or shredded chicken 2/3 cup evaporated milkInstructionsAdd potatoes with the contents [Read More...]

Rag Rug

How to Make a Rag Rug

I have long loved these rag rugs, but once I see the price tag I move away from them quickly. I finally decided to make one!  Here’s what you’ll need if you want to make one: 1 rollie pollie of Riley Blake Fabric 4 yards of some plain coordination fabric (I think it would be fun to get 2yds of one color and 2yrds of another) a rotary cutter needle and white thread sewing machine and scissors Begin by cutting your 4 yards of fabric into 2.5″  long strips. Yes this is a lot of cutting but if you have the rollie pollie you are saving a bit of cutting. Take three of your fabric strips, layer them on top of each other and sew a stitch across the top. Are you ready to get your braid on?  Take your sewn strips and tack them down on something with at safety pin.  Begin loosely braiding your strips together. Once you [Read More...]

St. Patrick’s 4-Leaf Clover Necklace

Making a clover necklace

The day of green is almost upon us.  Are you going to be pinch proof?  Here’s a fun way to make sure your kids are. The supplies you’ll need: Bakers Twine Paper Straws Green paper Cricut Explore or Clover punch Hole punch I had a little helper through this project which was so fun.  We began by using the new Cricut Explore to cut out the clover shapes onto fun green paper. She loved being able to watch the machine cut. I  punched a hole in the center of each clover so they would be easy to string. Then we cut our paper straws into about 1.5″ segments, and cut a length of bakers twine about 25″ and she began making her necklace. We had so much fun and now she is pinch proof! I can’t wait to make some more of these with my other girls! Pin It

Blurry Background Photography Tips

katie-evans-blurry-header

A NICE BLURRY BACKGROUND, AHHH. Does your brain start to spin when you start talking about ISO, shutter speed, and aperture? Not to fear, my friends! It is really quite simple. You just need to take it piece by piece and understand each term. So lets talk a bit about aperture, shall we? When you adjust the aperture on your camera you are adjusting the amount of light that is coming into your camera through your lens but you are also adjusting the amount of blurriness in your photo. (If you are reading this and thinking…aperture? I never adjust my aperture because I have my camera set on auto…tisk, tisk. It’s time to get it off auto! ) An example of a small aperture is f/22 (“small” referring to the opening of the lens) whereas an example of a very large aperture is f/1.8. (I know it sounds like that should be switched around but stay with me…) A large aperture (small number, [Read More...]

Glittery Valentine Candy Dishes

Glittery-Valentine-Dishes

Disclaimer: This project is sponsored by Elmer’s. Do you love this playfulness of Valentine’s Day like I do?  I love to add a little fun flare to my Valentine’s decor and what better way then with GLITTER! I decided the best way to do that this year was to add that fun sparkle to some plain white dishes, some in cute heart shapes.  I snagged some Elmer’s Craft Bond Glitter and got to work. I followed all package directions and made sure my dishes were clean and ready to go. Applied the included glue, just a thin layer, and then let the glittery fun begin. I shook off the excess glitter and then let the dishes set so the glue could dry completely before I did anything else. Next, I took some Elmer’s Glue-All and put a thin layer of that over top of the glitter so that it would seal it in.  I don’t plan on washing these pieces in my dishwasher [Read More...]

The World’s Best Homemade Laundry Soap

I’ve been very hesitant to make my own laundry soap although I have always wanted to.  I was scared because I have a nice HE washer and didn’t want to ruin it.  I know you have to use special laundry detergent in those babies and I was never sure if the homemade stuff would work.  Well, the reason you use special soap is because you need less suds.  Somewhere we all thought that suds equals cleaner things, but really it is just extra stuff that’s added.  If you go back to basics then you lose the extra and your laundry will look and feel amazing! Grandma’s Homemade Fudge–The BEST!

fudge-title

I remember countless Christmas’  sitting around the kitchen counter helping my mom make my Great Grandma Clarke’s homemade fudge.  It is so heavenly and I think one of my favorite treats of the season.  I wanted to make sure to share the recipe with you.  Since it’s an old homemade fudge recipe, it does take some time.  But believe me, every second is worth it! Place your sugar and cocoa in a heavy pan.  Add in the cream, butter, and vanilla. Bring it to a boil.  Place candy thermometer in pan and cook until temperature reaches 238 degrees F(114 degrees C).  Don’t scrape the sides of the pan while you are making this recipe. The sugar on the sides of the pan will cause the whole batch to crystallize and have a grainy texture.  You can wash down the sides of the pan using a pastry brush and some water.  Just brush the water on the sides of the pan. Santa Bag Tutorial

Rudolph Candy Canes {Christmas Traditions Series}

Welcome Crystal from A Pumpkin & A Princess.  Crystal has some amazing projects on her site and her pictures are beautiful.  Make sure you stop by her site. ********************************************************************** Hi everyone! I’m Crystal from A Pumpkin & A Princess and I’m so excited to be here today! I adore these ladies and their fabulous ideas so I was thrilled when they asked me to share one of my favorite Christmas traditions. Growing up my mother, sisters, and I always made food crafts for Christmas. Thinking back I’m not sure why that was but everything I can think of has some sort of food ingredient in it. Like salt dough ornaments and popcorn or fruit loop cereal garlands..oh those were my favorite! It would take us forever to finish a garland because we kept sneaking fruit loops from it. Another favorite were these Rudolph candy canes. My kids now love making these every year. We often hand them out at school with [Read More...]

Handmade Christmas Cards {Christmas Tradition Series}

We sure love Jen from Craft-O-Maniac.  She’s super fun and ultra creative. **************************************************************************** Hello The Crafting Chick fans, Jen here from  Craft-O-Maniac EEEP! I am thrilled to be here and to talk about a family tradition I have done growing up and still do to this day. I’m talking about “Handmade Christmas Cards.” There is nothing like receiving a handmade with “love” Christmas card. Growing up we would turn on some Christmas music, make hot cocoa, and then gather around our big family table and start making Christmas cards. I love making homemade Christmas cards and love that I am passing it onto my own children. Making handmade Christmas cards is special because you can personalize each and everyone. Plus you can do just about anything you want with them too. I love to give the cards textures and layers as well, it gives them personality.      Its easy to make Christmas cards, just gather up your favorite craft paper, embellishments, [Read More...]

White Christmas Sisters Feather Fan Tutorial {Christmas Tradition Series}

We are so excited to welcome Marissa From Rae Gun Ramblings. We love to have her stop by our site and share all her fun ideas.  We also love to hang out and chat with her.  She’s amazingly talented and super funny! ************************************************************************************ Hi all I’m Marissa from Rae Gun Ramblings. We have some fun Christmas traditions inour family from making wontons from scratch to making handmade ornaments but my favorite tradition has got to be watching White Christmas. We are a little obsessed. Since we were little my sister and I would watch the classic movie and talk about which dresses we we liked best, singing the songs and most importantly loving that “Sisters” number that they sang in those beautiful blue dresses.   Now that my nieces are older we’ve finally succeeded in getting them equally obsessed with the movie. So to feed our silliness this year I made some simple feathered fans just like the girls use [Read More...]

Santa Sack Printables

Santa-Sack-printables

Today I am over on Tater Tots and Jello sharing our new Christmas tradition– The Santa Sack. I don’t know about you, but it seems like each year we accumulate more and more toys.  I thought this would be the perfect solution to our problem and hopefully it will help your family out too. Each year when our elf Peter comes, he will bring this sack with him and the cute little printable attached.  I will probably work out some kind of Family Home Evening lesson to go with it so that the girls know that we have plenty and need to worry about helping others by giving what we have excess of to those who don’t have much or any.  If I do anything formal I’ll make sure I share it here. So head over to Tater Tots and Jello to get my tutorial for making the bag, and if you are coming here from there, then here’s your [Read More...]

Strip Quilted Dish Mat

Strip Quilted Dish Mat made out of an old towel and beautiful fabric

I shared this fun tutorial last week over on Riley Blake’s blog as part of their Design Team.  We sure love working with them and the wonderful fabric. Today I wanted to share this fun Strip Quilted Dish Mat. I was at my sister’s house when she whipped one of these out that her mother-in-law had made.  I needed one and I know you do too. Oh, and they are so easy and fun that you probably want to make some for your friend’s and family members for gifts. Fabric requirements: I used a Rollie Polie of Priscilla. Love this fabric line. I also used an old bath towel I had for the backing.  You could buy terry cloth if you wanted but if you have an old towel hanging around I’d recommend using that. Now this Rollie Polie will make about 3 dish mats, so you are welcome to cut your own fabric if you don’t want the left [Read More...]

Cool Weather Picks

I love a good hot chocolate and this Starbucks Salted Caramel or the dark chocolate are my favorites. It’s a sad day when I have to trade in my flip flops for real shoes, but if I do at least I have Smartwool socks to help get me through. They are a favorite at our house, and somehow Santa always seems to sneak a pair into each of our stockings. My husband loves the Diamond Jims. I like the taller socks to wear with boots, but my favorite are the ultra light PhD ankle socks. Normally I wouldn’t spend very much on a pair of socks, but these socks last for a really long time and I think they are worth every penny. Hot Cocoa Machine We have this “Cocomotion” hot chocolate machine that is perfect for the colder months! It makes up to 4 cups of hot chocolate at once–heats it up and makes it all yummy and frothy. It’s that time of year.  Grab your recent family pictures and start making your Christmas cards! We are lucky to partner with Black River Imaging again, to not only show off the amazing possibilities they have, but to giveaway $150 credit to their site for one lucky reader! Now onto the cards! Nikkala is always killing us with her creativity.  This year she is using one of the LOFT shaped cards.  Love these. And I love how she was able to add the smallest details to the front of her card yet it is super fun. The back of the card is a fun twist on the typical newsletter, featuring each member of the family.  She designed her wrap around address labels, also from Black River Imaging to have their return address on the back of the card, and the front will add a fun burst of color to the front of the craft paper envelopes. Quick, Easy, and Spooky Halloween Decor

halloween decor

I was feeling like I wanted a little something new for Halloween this year.  I had some ideas of what I wanted and my Cricut was going to help me do it. I had this wooden box, from some Melissa & Doug toy set my girls got, and jazzed it up with some grey and white stripes.  Got out my black Cricut vinyl and used the Monster Bash cartridge to cut out this spooky house. The “Eek” is using Boys Will Be Boys Font cartridge.  Loved that font with this. I didn’t stop there.  I searched for a fun bat and using my left over All Hallow’s Eve from Carta Bella paper set, I made this bat specimen art. I choose the bat from the Creative Memories This and That cartridge.  Cut him out on this great Carta Bella paper, and mounted him using foam squares onto this other great paper. (This is the same paper set I used to make [Read More...]

Handprint Bats:: Halloween Crafts for Kids

I did this project last year when I taught Joy School for my second daughter.  The kids loved it and had tons of fun putting these together.  The parents loved it and I had friends asking for instructions once I posted the picture on Instagram.  So I thought I better share it this year since there is some more time.  These would be perfect for kids in a classroom, or just for a fun craft with your kids. Handprint Bats You’ll need: template (download included) black paper (I used card stock) orange paper scissors chalk or white pencil or crayon googley eyes glue stick marker First off you will need the bat template. She has these great Create and Make classes and one happens to be this fun little advent and the kit you can buy.  I was so excite to make them and wanted to share them with you. This class allows you to use any Halloween paper, but I used Carina’s All Hallow’s Eve collection which you can get from Carta Bella. These worked up pretty quick and my girls loved helping with them.  Especially filling them with candy.   My advice is to watch the video from Carina before you begin.  Depending on the age of your kids, you can also do all the cutting before [Read More...]

Chicks Picks:: Organizational Products

Chick Picks: Favorite Organizational Items

  I always get a bug to clean and organize once the kids go back to school.  Here are some of the items we couldn’t do without to keep us on track and organized.   Mom Do It All Calendar I must have a calendar with everything where I can see it.  I use my phone and computer calendars, but there is nothing like having it written down in my opinion.  I love this one because it has lines for each family member and gives you a lot more space than other calendars.  It’s also a 17 month calendar which I love! Sterilite Stackable Storage Drawers I have always loved these. This is my very favorite organizational item. They are stackable and durable. I have a tower of 3 in each of my kids’ closets. I’ve never wanted regular drawers with boys in the house because I feel like they break easier. The plastic drawers are much better. LOVE! Mind [Read More...]

Honey Taffy

honey and cream taffy

This is a post sponsored by Blueprint Social and Disney.  All opinions are my own When I was young I remember popping in video of The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.  My sisters and I would watch it over and over.  The Hundred Acre Woods was a magical place and we loved to watch and see all the wonderful adventures that Pooh and his friends had. Now if you know that silly old bear, you know he LOVES honey.  What better way to watch the movie then with some honey treats.  I decide to make some Honey Cream Taffy. Enjoy! Grease a 15x10x1-in. pan with butter; place in the refrigerator. In a large deep heavy saucepan, combine 1 cup cream and 2 cups honey. Add 1 cup sugar; cook over medium heat and stir with a wooden spoon until sugar is melted and mixture comes to a boil. Cover pan with a tight-fitting lid and boil for 1 minute. How to Make Your Own Parachute Toys

Parachute-toy

Last month I was over at Skip to my Lou last sharing how to make Parachute Toys!  Well, I don’t want any of you to miss out on the fun so here’s my post just in case you missed it over there! You are going to need basic supplies: A plastic shopping bag scissors string (or baker’s twine if that’s handy) tape a small toy figure that isn’t too heavy Take your bag and cut down each side.  Then you will cut out squares for the parachutes.  For the small parachutes I used 6×6 inch squares 9×9 for the large. Next, take your string and cut it 9 inches long for a small parachute and 12 inches for a large one.  You will need 4 pieces of string per parachute. Take the parachute and punch a hole in each corner far enough in that it won’t tear easily, but not too far in.  Tie a piece of string through the [Read More...]

Doll Bedding For Poppy Seed Projects Beds

Doll-bedding-for-Poppy-Seed

I was so excited when I found out that Poppy Seed Projects was going to start making doll beds that fit American Girl Dolls.  As a mother of 3 girls, (and 3 American Girl dolls), I knew that these were going to be a hit at my house! For weeks my two oldest begged me to begin their beds.  I put it off, cause if I’m honest, I have to gear up for sewing.  Not that this project is super hard, but I have to get myself to a special mental place where I can be a nice mom, but still focus and concentrate.  I’m not a mom that can sew with the girls hanging on me. Strength Of My Love For You Printable

Strenght-of-my-love-prints

You might remember seeing this quote from my girls room re-do and the colorful frame wall I did.  I have loved this quote since I first pinned it. I think it’s because getting, and staying pregnant, was so hard for me that once it finally happened I savored the sound of each heartbeat.  It brings me a bit of joy to think that each of my girls knows what my heart sounds like from the inside!   I used 3 different backgrounds and printed each of them because I wasn’t sure which one I wanted to use.  That is good news for you cause now you have choices.  Strength Of My Love—Once you download you will need to unzip the file in order to print. This pink one worked best for my room, but I almost went with the polka dots.  And who can say no to the chevron stripes?  Each of the backgrounds is a part of Crystal Wilkerson’s [Read More...]

Colorful Frame Gallery

Colorful Frame Gallery on The Crafting Chicks

I cannot tell you how excited I am about this post today!  This project has been one that took me a little longer to work on, but it has paid off.  I am in LOVE I tell you, L-O-V-E! I knew when I started my girl’s new room that I would want to add pops of color where I could.  The chevron wall was fun but I still wanted a little more.  I also loved the idea of having great uplifting sayings as well as family pictures surrounding them.  So I ran into Poppy Seed Projects and started pulling frames off the shelves and placing them on the floor.  Holly, from Poppy Seed, was so good to help me mix and match so that I could get the look I wanted.  We got everything laid out on the floor and then started deciding what colors to paint everything. Ready for some hints on colors? You’ll want to choose 4-5 colors.  Having [Read More...]

Halloween Character Candles

I got to share this fun Halloween idea on Skip To My Lou this past weekend and wanted to make sure that all our readers got a peek at it too. I’m getting so excited for fall.  One of the funnest holidays is Halloween don’t you think?!?  I’m not into all the creepy, scary, bloody things.  I like the fun cute things.  What better way to have fun with Halloween decor then making  Halloween character faces on votive candle holders? I found a 6 pack of clear votive candle holders at Hobby Lobby and thought I could do something fun and festive with them. I used DecoArt glass paint to just paint one layer over each of the glass votives.  I followed all the directions on the paint.   Once the paint was dry, I use the Deco Art 3D Opaque Glass Writers for the faces.  It was so fun to draw fun faces on these little guys! If you like simple but statement making projects this one is for you! I saw these great bud vases on sale at Target and had to snag a few up.  I’m thinking these are going to make a great pick-me-up gift for some friends.  Who doesn’t love to get flowers?!? I could have left these nice and clear, ya know, like boring glass.  But I decided to jazz these up a bit with frosted glass paint.  I went to my Americana glass painting supple stash and found the perfect colors. Using a paint brush, I applied the paint in 3 sections.  The first section I did 3 layers of paint letting each layer dry before applying the next layer.  The second section I did 2 layers and let each dry. With the third section only receiving a light layer.  I tried to over lap and blend each layer in to the next.  It is subtle but I love it! I [Read More...]

Monogram Painted on Canvas

ink-effects-monogram on canvas

I was really excited to get to try the new Ink Effects from DecoArt. Ink Effects is a new paint line for use on fabrics.  The amazing thing with this paint line is that you can paint any piece of white paper and then iron onto fabric without any crusty feel.  It is truly fun and amazing.  Where has this paint been all my life? I had a couple ideas of what I wanted to do but I settled on making a canvas monogram for my baby girl’s room. I found a really cute font, Floral, for my letter. I used the Ink Effects paints to add the color I wanted.  In the instructions it will tell you that the paint color will not be the same as the iron on color.  The color you iron on will be brighter, so don’t be disappointed with your color when you first paint. Since I was painting onto cotton, I used the cotton fabric [Read More...]

Father’s Day Hand-print Tree Free Printable

Father's Day Handprint Tree printable

If you’ve followed this blog for a while you know I am a huge fan of using my kids hand-prints to make gifts and keepsakes.  I saw something similar to this on Pinterest and knew that I wanted to make it. I used one of Crystal Wilkerson’s trees from her Funky Fresh Forest Stickers with the leaves removed. Then I put some green paint on my girl’s hands and had them stamp the tree.  Super cute, super easy. Here’s your chance for a fun Father’s Day gift.  Just print this out.  I sent mine to Sam’s Club photo as an 11×14, (which is the size I’ve made the printable).  This way you will have nice spacing for the hand-prints.  Make sure that you turn off the auto color correct.  Your tree will turn out black instead of brown if you don’t.  Guess who forgot to do it?  Yup, I did.  But they were nice enough to fix my mistake. Stenciled Vintage Pyrex Dishes

vintage pyrex dishes

I’ve fallen in love with vintage Pyrex dishes.  Have you seen these?  Fun colors and some with fun patterns and prints.  In one of my recent thrift store runs I picked up a couple dishes and just knew that something fun would be in store for them.  I received a challenge from Studio 5 to use a Martha Stewart stencil set  in a fun unique way.  My dishes came to mind and I was super excited.   I wanted to make these dishes pop with color.  I got some fun, bright paint colors from the Martha Stewart paint line and carefully chose which stencils I wanted to place on each dish.  That was the hard part because the stencil set I got had so many fun stencils. First off, I cut my stencil out so it would fit inside my dishes and taped it down.   I used the Martha Stewart sponge pouncers to apply the paint.  Be careful not [Read More...]

How To Make A Floor Puzzle

puzzle-title

My girls LOVE puzzles.  They will sit for a long time working on puzzles and that makes me happy cause they are busy doing something besides watching TV. Since General Conference for the LDS Church is coming up this weekend, I thought it was the perfect time to make some church related puzzles for them to work on while we are listening. These are so quick, easy and fun to make, I just had to share. For this project you will need some foam core board, spray adhesive, a rotary cutter/box cutter, and pictures.  For the picture of my girls,  I found one that had been a little beat up so I didn’t mind cutting it up. You could really do anything that has meaning to your kids.  I think that’s where the real fun comes in. First off I bought my foam core at Staples.  It was a 30×40″ piece so I can still get at least two more puzzles [Read More...]

Stripe Frame with ScotchBlue Painter’s Tape with Edge-Lock Paint Line Protector

B-in-frame

I don’t know about you, but I have tried to paint with the cheap painter’s tape, and let’s just say, the result wasn’t pretty.  There were places where the paint bled through and the perfect line I was striving for wasn’t there. Necktie Redo: {Necktie Necklace}

I’m so excited to share my fun Necktie Necklace redo with you today.  I’ve had this one in my head for like 6 months just needing the time to get it together.  Now that it’s been made let me tell you, it comes together really quick. So here’s what you need: a man’s necktie, beads (I used wooden ones I bought at Hobby Lobby), a sewing machine, and an un-picker. My husband had this really nice necktie that had a big stain on it.  I was super excited when I got permission to make something new out of this one.  I began by unpicking the back stitches of the tie.  Super easy cause there wasn’t too much to unpick. Once you have it all unpicked, you just want to remove the stiff material in the middle of the tie. Fold the tie, right sides together and sew a straight line to make a tube. Rick Rack Rosette and Pearl Necklace

It’s pretty simple really, but here’s how I did it. I followed all of Nikkala’s instructions for making the rick rack rosettes, but instead of making my rick rack 10-12 inches long, I made mine 5 inches so that they would be mini. I then cut my pearl strand and restrung it sewing the rick rack rosettes on jump rings and placing them on the strand as well. I think it is so fun and the rick rack rosettes add just a fun bit of whimsy. I’ll be sharing how to make the Rick Rack Rosettes on Fresh Living today at 1pm [Read More...]

Felt Christmas Trees

I shared these fun little guys on I {heart} Nap Time for her Crazy Christmas Crafters. I didn’t want anyone to miss out so here are my felt Christmas trees.  These little guys are so much fun to have around and there are so many things you can do to make them your own.  Here’s the basics of what you will need. Wool Felt in various colors (I used a dark green, light green and a white.  I used one sheet of 18×18″ of each color to get all three of my trees made.) Styrofoam cones in various sizes cutting board and rotary cutter sewing machine glue gun   First off, I cut my wool felt into various sized strips from 3″-4″ for each color. Then I wrapped the felt around the cone to get the shape for the felt to be cut into.  You will want to make sure to get some curvature with your felt.  This part is very tricky, but once you [Read More...]

thankful-jar

Thanksgiving is almost here!  It’s my favorite time of year.  Here’s a fun little idea that you can whip up really quick and use as a gift, as place settings, or just as table decor if you need a little something. I have tons of baby food jars left over, but I also got a pint size mason jar for some of these too.  I filled them with some popcorn kernels and placed the candle inside.  I got some burlap and wrapped it around the jar and then added some ribbon.   I knew that I wanted to attach a note of sorts so I came up with this Thankful tag.  Feel free to print your own, but please only personal non-commercial use. Added the tag and there you have it.  I can’t wait to give these to my friends! We were honored when Marilyn of The ArtsyGirl Connection contacted us about being involved in her Project Pink:: Painting the Blog world Pink for a day in honor of Breast Cancer.   This subject touches very close to my heart because 4 1/2 years ago my dear sweet mother-in-law lost her fight with breast cancer.  My girls will never in this life time know the wonderful woman that raised their father, other then in stories and pictures.  I want to help in any way I can to make this disease disappear. About a year ago, Jen made this adorable Find the Cure water bottle label.  Just the perfect thing to help support any breast cancer cause.  I asked Jen if she would mind if we posted it as a free printable and she was more than happy to help.  She is a champion for a good cause.  We sure love Jen and are grateful for her talents!  Go here to [Read More...]

Halloween Treat Tags

Halloween-treat-tag

I made this fun treat tag as a guest post on Modern Mom.  Sometimes it seems like we are always just handing out the candy and I wanted to do something to make it a fun for some special friends. So here’s what you’ll need: fun Halloween paper clothes pins ribbon hot glue gun or other adhesive small jewlery sacks candy corns or other small treats black ink a print out of the Halloween sayings Start out by hot gluing your ribbon to your clothes pins.  I added these spooky spider embellishments.  You could just tie another fun ribbon on the clothes pin if you can’t find a fun embellishment like these. Next cut your paper.  For the background paper I cut it to 3×6.  I cut the word paper to fit so just make it to your liking. After everything is cut, ink your edges.  The messier the better on this. I think it gives it a fun spooky [Read More...]

Tutu Costume Ideas :: A Challenge from Little Cherry Blossoms

_MG_0376 m

We were excited when Carey from Little Cherry Blossoms sent us a craft challenge.  She sent us each some tulle and asked us to come up with fun ideas for tutu Halloween costumes.  Here’s what we did: Becky made a darling Candy Corn tutu out of orange and peach tulle, along with a spunky tulle and ribbon headband. Nikkala made this amazing Owl tutu out of peach and brown–check out her fun fabric “feathers” and her owl hood! Instead of a tutu skirt, Kirsten made a pretty mermaid dress out of blue and green (and some extra sparkly fabric she had on hand). Brooke created a pirate girl’s tutu with black and a melony pink tulle, complete with a black satin rosette eyepatch! ARRRRRRRRRRR, matey!   Jamie used the black tulle to create a little black tutu for a cat costume.  She used black “boa” material from the craft store to attach a tail to the back and little cuffs on [Read More...]

Creamy Caramel Apple Dip

Creamy-Caramel-Apple-Dip

One of my favorite Autumn treats are the fresh apples.  And nothing goes better with apples than caramel.  Add some cream cheese and I am one happy girl.  I got this yummy recipe from my husband’s family and it has become a staple in our house.  I love to whip it up and take it to a party, or just to a neighbor for a fun surprise. Here’s what you’ll need to make it. 3/4 Cup Brown Sugar 1/4 Cup Sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 8 oz soften cream cheese (I use the less fat kind and it seems to be even creamier)   Throw everything in a bowl and mix together until creamy.  I have seen some people even throw in crushed up toffee candy bars for a fun crunch. Serve with some yummy apples and you are all set! Enjoy!!! I’m guest posting today on Modern Mom’s Crafternoon.  Come see what spooky treat I whipped up over there!   [Read More...]

Swap a Smile–Charity Auction

600 wide banner

We as women and mothers delight in the joy of raising our families despite some of the frustrations and effort it takes.  We delight in hearing and seeing our children grow and learn, and we strive to put their needs before our own.  Their heartaches are OUR heartaches and their joy is OUR joy.  So imagine if you had a child who was beautiful and happy in everyway…but who did not have a beautiful outer physical smile to match the beauty of their inner smile? Every three minutes a child is born with a cleft — often unable to eat, speak, socialize or smile. In some places these children are shunned and rejected. And in too many cases, their parents can’t afford to give them the surgeries they need to live a normal life.  Whereas, most of us are blessed to be living in Nations and countries where we have access to basic services and healthcare for our families which [Read More...]

Celebration Cinch Book

I have had some fun lately with my Cinch with good reason.  My aunt just celebrated her 10 year sobriety birthday which is a huge accomplishment.  After talking to one of my sisters I decided to do something special for her to help her celebrate.  I emailed all our family and her friends and asked them to write her a letter.  It was so amazing to read through the letters and see how she has changed others lives. I took an old cereal box and cut two 7×7 pieces out, Mod Podged some scrapbook paper on the cardboard, and then added the establishments like ribbon, and quotes with some inked edges.  (You can see a great step-by-step from Jamie on making a Cinch book here.) I put all the letters I received into a Word doc. and made my page format fit the 7×7 size so I would only have to worry about cutting the paper along the bottom.  (Not just a hat [Read More...]

I’m so excited to FINALLY be sharing a project with the Crafting Chicks readers.  Truth be told…I was once or twice or maybe seven times invited to be a “Crafting Chick” (Long before they became “THE” Crafting chicks).   Out of pure laziness I never made a single post.  I just couldn’t find the motivation to actually write about any of my projects once they were finished.     I also never think to take pictures along the way, so this project took a serious conscious effort! It’s selfish of me really…I sure enjoy reading a plethora of crafty blogs and ideas.  I guess this is me giving back to the crafting society.  I hope you enjoy!My [Read More...]

Peachy Keen Dessert

Peachy Keen Ingredients

Today I am sharing one of my husbands favorite desserts.  He begs for this dessert any time he sees peaches.  In fact the name for this dessert in my Grandma’s cookbook is actually Peach Ice Box Dessert, but my hubby renamed it Peachy Keen Dessert so that’s what I’ll call it here.  It is super easy to make so here goes. You will need: 6-8 large peaches, peeled and chopped 1 can of sweetened condensed milk 1 carton of Cool Whip 1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice (I cheated and used the concentrate instead) 2 ready pie graham crusts   First off mix your sweetened condensed milk, Cool Whip, and lemon juice together. Once you get that mixed well, add your peaches. Then pour your mixture into your pie shells.  You could also use mini pie shells to make personal serving portions.  Or make your own graham cracker crust and pour all of this into a 9×13 pan. Refrigerate for [Read More...]

Thank you to LUNA Protein for providing me a LUNA Protein sample pack to review. The opinions I’ve expressed here are solely my own and represent my honest viewpoint. It seems like Back-to-School hits and mom’s all over are scrambling to get school supplies, treats, backpacks, new clothes, and anything else the kids might need all together and ready for the blessed day!  With all that rushing around, once the kids are back under the watchful eye of a teaching professional, it is time to focus on YOU! Back-to-School time is a time for me to realign myself with my goals and priorities.  One of my biggest goals is getting my body back in shape after having my baby.  I love to excercise.  (Yes you read that right…I’m crazy)  It helps me have time for just me (the kids go to the child care center), and I am so much happier mentally and physically. Summer Tent

Summer tent

I saw this idea in the Pottery Barn Kids catalog and thought, “I’m sure I could do that and my girls would LOVE it!”  Seems like ever since summer started they have been dragging blankets and pillows outside to relax and play on.  This tent would be the perfect place for them to hang out and have a special spot (without roasting in the hot summer sun. Now I probably could have taken a few months to figure out the measurements and all, but lucky for me I knew right where to look for the instructions…Ana White.  These plans were written by Anna of Lawrence Girls (which is another really fun site).  I was amazed at the simplicity of this tent and since the plans are right there for all of you, I will skip the tutorial and just show you what I did. The only difference is that I got about 5 yards of fabric to cover the tent [Read More...]

How to Make Slime!::Kids Craft

Hadley

Most of my time has been taken up by this sweet face! Isn’t she sweet?!?   I figured it was about time that my older girls get some time with mommy.  I wanted to make some play-dough but decided to make this slime when I found the recipe in my grandma’s cookbook.  I’ll share it with a warning: this is really, REALLY messy stuff, but my girl’s loved it and had a blast.  I would suggest aprons and an outdoor location or at least cover your area in plastic in playing.   Okay so to make the slime you need: 1/2 cup of cornstarch 2 cups of water food coloring Mix the cornstarch and water in a sauce pan and bring to a boil stirring constantly. Once it looks smooth and has thickened move it off the burner and let cool to room temp. Once it is cool spoon out for the kiddos to play with.  Sit back and feel like a rockstar [Read More...]

Rhinestone T-Shirts

Silhouette supplies

I have a confession.  My Silhouette and I had a fight a little while back.  It all started when some vinyl wouldn’t cut properly, which I have to admit was mostly my fault.  I had to take a step back and evaluate our relationship. I am happy to say that we have reconciled recently and it is all because of the fun rhinestone kit I got.  Oh, I had so much fun with this kit and I know you will too.  The fact that my house is filled with little girls helps in the love of all things shiny and blingy. When my girls saw the rhinestones they were begging to have me make them something.  I luckily had some of these fabulous shirts for them from Andee Lew (LOVE THESE SHIRTS!!).  We picked out some colors, cut out the cute flowers with my Silhouette, then ironed the rhinestones on.  It was so fun and came together pretty quick.  My girls put [Read More...]

In my freezer meal searching I came across this company that has a fabulous system to get you started on freezer meals.  It is 30 Meals in One Day. After my sister purchased the program, I was interested.  I contacted the company to find out more and they sent me the whole program to try and share with you. I got together with my friend, Kristin, to try this out so I would have [Read More...]

Easter Egg Place Mats With Felt

supplies for egg placemat

Well Easter is just around the corner.  I was needing  something to bring a little fun and color to my Easter table.  I decided I could make some Easter Egg Place mats out of felt.  They were so easy and I actually had all the supplies on hand so it didn’t cost me anything, but I think the cost would be minimal if you had to buy the supplies. Let’s get started. You’ll need: large felt squares (for a fun variety of colors go visit Wool Felt Central) glue gun or craft glue (the kids can make these if you use the craft glue) ribbon   I started out by cutting my felt into an oval egg shape.  You could leave the felt in a square if you wanted and make some cute place mats that way. Then pull out your ribbon and run it across your felt.  I liked to move it around and see how I liked it [Read More...]

Hello Crafting Chicks fans! I’m Taylor from MaryJanes and Galoshes, very excited to be here today so thank you for having me.  When trying to decide what I wanted to share with you today I was inspired by all the fun spring things the Crafting Chicks have been posting lately.  I think this project would be perfect for a keepsake Mother’s Day gift, but I can think of a hundred other reasons to make and display it for anyone! I think it represents a lot of what I do over at MJ&G so if you like this project you may like others I’ve shared there and would like to stop by sometime. {My Spring Celebration Announcement} What’s Yours?

shutterfly-announcement-celebration

Ah Springtime!  I just love it.  Time for rebirth, sunshine, and celebrations.  The celebration for our little family, has been welcoming a new sweet baby girl back in March.  I am sure enjoying that new bundle and learning how to juggle her along with her sisters. The juggling is one of the reasons I am so excited about this post.  See, I have been planning on making birth announcements in Photoshop like I did for my other girls, but I have just not found the time to sit down and do it.  Shutterfly has come to my rescue.  They have so many darling birth announcements and all I have to do is add the beautiful babe’s picture and I am all set.  A new mom’s dream–to have something cute and chic, yet have enough time to catch a nap. This is the one I think I’m gonna get. Or maybe this one… It’s so hard to decide.  Oh I can’t [Read More...]

“Tied To You” Date:: Guest Post from Erika of The Dating Divas

My name is Erika and I’m so excited to be blogging today on the Crafting Chicks! I have LOVED this site since they began and was thrilled when they asked me to share one of my recent date ideas. I am one of eleven Divas from The Dating Divas – a group of gals who love our husbands but found that once we were married it takes some work to keep romance alive. We share a new, inexpensive date idea each week along with marriage tips, quick and easy romance ideas, craft tutorials, and much more to improve relationships. I recently did a date with the theme “Tied to You.” This could easily be used for any date night or a romantic night like an anniversary or Valentine’s day. Start your date off-right with this note on the door. Get your “Tied” poem here! I wanted to create a “Tied to You” theme since I’m lucky to have tied the [Read More...]

Spring Cleaning:: Motivation Tips

spring flowers

It’s that time of year.  Spring cleaning is in the air.  Are you ready?  I thought I could help out with sharing some  tricks and tips and ways that I motivate myself and ways that I have gotten my kiddos involved.  Now I’m no pro, but these things have helped me so hopefully they will help you too. One of the first things I do before I start cleaning is make a plan in my head.  Nothing huge but it helps me not walk around aimlessly.  You probably do this without thinking about it. How much time do I have? Where do I want to start? What can the girls help me do? Once I have these questions answered I can start. My next step is to light a candle.  For some reason I clean better with a candle going.  I guess getting my house to smell good motivates me. I also like to open all my blinds to make sure I have [Read More...]

New Daddy Gift Basket

New  daddy basket treats

I came up with this idea right before giving birth to my third baby girl. That pregnancy has been a little more difficult since I had to chase after my two older girls and have not had as much time to myself for the rest that is needed.  I am sure that I have focused tons on my needs and demanded more from my sweet husband.  He has been great going above and beyond in order for me to get that extra rest I’ve needed. Since birth and pregnancy are mostly about the mom and new baby, I was thinking that he needed a special treat.  I decided to make him a fun little goodie basket to take to the hospital.  I’m sure the guy in your life would love it too . Here’s what you will need: His favorite treats A basket big enough for all your treats Fun little labels to write love/thank you notes on (I used the Artisan Labels [Read More...]

Minky Taggie Blanket

One of my cute friends gave me a blankie like this after I had my second baby girl.  My little E loves it still.  I thought it would be a fun thing to make for my new little niece, and it just so happens that when you make one, you will end up having enough supplies to make around 3.   Here’s what you need: Minky fabric (I made each of my blankies16″ x 16″ and used a solid pink on one side and a cute strip on the other side.  I have seen smaller and slightly larger blankies.) Ribbons (I got a yard of 6 different ribbons for 3 blankies) cutting board and scissors or rotary cutter sewing machine thread straight pins   To begin, I cut my fabric into the size I wanted, the 16″x16″. Next cut your ribbon to 6″ so that when they loop they are big enough for a baby to hold onto. Take the [Read More...]

12 Days of Christmas Ideas

deck the halls banner sm

One of my favorite things to do during the holiday season is the 12 Days of Christmas.  For as long as I can remember, my mom has been making up fun little packages of 12 Days gifts for widows or widowers.  She would drive up to 40 miles to deliver these packages, most the time not even knowing the person who was recieiving them, just finding out that they needed Christmas cheer. We have kind of done this on and off for a few years, but decided to pick this up last year as a family and delivered one bag full of fun gifts to a single lady who doesn’t have family near.  It was so exciting to drop the bag off and run and just know that she was going to have a fun surprise awaiting her each night til Christmas.  This year we are going to deliever to her again and two other elderly couples in our neighborhood.  [Read More...]

Thankful Tree

Can I just say that we {heart} our readers?!?  We really do.  I got this idea straight from one of you.  It was so fabulous that I had  to try it.  So thanks, June, for sending in your version and the link to one of our favorites Skip to My Lou, who inspired you. Here is my version of a Thankful Tree. Supplies you will need: tree branches vase, jar, or bucket for the tree branches ribbon die cut leaves First off find a nice branch with lots of different branches for hanging the thankful leaves from.  I had to go to my neighbor’s yard for this, but aren’t the leaves beautiful?  I used them to decorate the inside of my vase. I love the color.  Once you have some filling inside, arrange your branches to where you like them. Now you can decorate your vase.  I found some fun fall colored ribbon and tied it on.  I also had this fun embossed [Read More...]

Be Thankful Board

supplies for thanksgiving

I hope you will all forgive me for starting to post Thanksgiving ideas. I know Halloween isn’t over, but I just love Thanksgiving and the message that we should stop and thank those around us for everything we have.  I also love the food involved in this holiday too. I wanted to make a small something that would help me remember to stop and think about being thankful.  I loved Brooke’s canvas she made last year and wanted to try something like that.  I decided on this Be Thankful wood board.  I hope you enjoy. You will need: a wooden board scrapbook paper brown paint Mod Podge Vinyl lettering Ribbon if desired (I ended up not using any ribbon)   Begin by painting your board.  I just painted the outside edges and some of the front, but since I was going to cover it, why waste more time painting right?!? Ghostly Handprints:: Halloween Kid Craft

trick or tweet banner2 copy

I LOVE doing kid crafts that involve my girl’s hands.  It is so fun to have something that we can look back and see how they have grown.  I was telling some friends about this fun project I had up my sleeve and they wanted in so we had a fun little party making these cute Ghost handprints.   I have to say it was actually nice to have the extra hands helping too.  With little ones and paint you can never have too many eyes watching. Here’s what you’ll need to make your own: Small canvas (I used 6×6, but if you have more kids you could do a longer one with all their hands on one.  I think that would be SUPER cute!) Black paint white paint (I used a glossy paint) glitter silver pen   I pre-painted the canvas so that I wouldn’t have to worry about doing it with the kiddos around. I put some white glossy [Read More...]

Caramel Apples

granny smith apples

I am so excited that fall is just around the corner.  I love the smells, the holidays, and especially the food.  One thing my mom use to make with us as kids was Caramel Apples.  I finally got around to making some of our own. Get some yummy fresh Granny Smith apples.  Wash them well, and remove the stems. Get your sticks and insert into your apples where you removed the stems. Grab your caramels and unwrap.  Or I found these great caramels that are small like pebbles.  They are great and they even come with the stick inside the package.  I’ve had a hard time finding them, but they are made by Kraft. Add 2 tbsp. of water or milk, and microwave for the time amount on the package, or about 2 minutes to start and then stir and microwave at 30 second intervals to get the melting  right. I like to pull out some wax paper and sprinkle [Read More...]

Bookmark for Mama!

Supplies needed to make bookmarks

I have been a bookworm this summer.  I have read so many great books and can’t tear myself away from Mockingjay currently.  It seems that I use whatever I can find as a bookmark.  An old receipt, a candy wrapper, a tissue  (not a used one though).  Please tell me I’m not the only one who does this.  I decided enough is enough.  Mama needs her own bookmark.  So here’s how you can make one too.  You’ll need: Scrapbook paper wooden popsicle sticks (I’ve heard that Hobby Lobby has some different shaped sticks that would be fun.) Mod Podge ribbon ink pad sandpaper I just traced a pattern with my popsicle sticks onto the paper and cut it out.  I didn’t worry too much about it being nice and straight.  I Mod Podged the paper onto the sticks and then sanded the edges.  I did another layer of Mod Podge and then inked.  Next I got my ribbon and had [Read More...]

Yummy Corn-on-the-Cob

One of my favorite things about summer is the FOOD!!! I love food fresh from the garden and I enjoy getting whatever I don’t grow, from local farmers. Luckily I live really close to Day’s Farms, a local farm that sells such yummy fruits and veggies.  Now when is comes to this fresh food, not many things are better than fresh corn on the cob rolled in butter with salt and pepper.  My Mother-in-law made the BEST corn on the cob and I am going to share her secrets with you.  (That’s how much we love our readers! We share secret family recipes!)  I am sure this will become the staple way that you make your corn from now on. Fill a pot with cold water and place on your stove top.  The cold water will help the corn kernels stay firm and crisp. Next add a splash of lemon juice and a dash of sugar.  I really don’t measure these [Read More...]

{Special After School Treat::Peanut Butter and Jelly Cupcakes} Back to School Brainstorm

backtoschoolbrainstormbanner

Brooke posted earlier about our amazing experience in the Cupcake Class at Thanksgiving Point.  It was so much fun.  When Sara, the amazingly talented instructor, told us she was going to make Peanut Butter and Jelly cupcakes, I have to admit I was a bit skeptical, but these turned out to be one of my favorites of the night.  I thought instantly that they would be such a fun treat for after school.  Ya know, a twist on PB&J and all.  Here is the recipe: Peanut Butter and Jelly Cupcakes 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon baking soda ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened 1 1/3 cups granulated sugar 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter 3 eggs, room temp. 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 2/3 cup sour cream Jar of your favorite jam, (use homemade jam if you can) 1 recipe of Butter cream frosting Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Sift together the dry milk and powder sugar. Add the dry mixture to the peanut butter mixture all at once. Mix it all together with a spoon and then with hands. Knead to finish making it smooth and pliable. Use as you would any play dough, then the children can eat their creations. Oh, I have been dying to make one of these corsage type t-shirts for almost a year.  I even found two shirts at Target for $1.98 each, (Ah, how I love Target.  Like Kirsten said before, we aren’t even being paid for these endorsements, but we do love the place.)  These shirts having been hanging out in the bottom of my “to-do craft” pile.  I finally got a vision for what I wanted and got working.  Here is what you will need: 2 of the same t-shirts (If you are going to do this with a friend, I would suggest just buying 3 shirts and getting one as large as you can so you can share the fabric from it.) a needle and thread scissors tulle (I did mine in a matching color, but do what you like.)   First off, I found something round (my handy rice cooker measuring cup) that was the size I wanted for my flowers.  (I [Read More...]

Chocolate Cookie mix tag for Visiting Teaching

I’m back to help make your visiting teaching fun and easy.  So go make your appointments and I will tell you what you need! The lesson for the month of July is on Strengthening Families and Homes.  When I was thinking of things I could do for the sisters I visit, I wanted to focus around something the family could do together during family home evening. I found this recipe for Chocolate Cookies in a Jar and thought it would be a perfect way for you to take a treat that the family can make together without too much prep.  Besides, who doesn’t love a yummy treat?!?! I also found these cute little tags from Summertime Design and added the info I wanted on them. One is the cookie recipe  (what they need to do with the mix) and the other one has a quote from the lesson. (You can download and print them by clicking on the words above.  I made them [Read More...]

I have to say that I {heart} my crock pot in the summer.  I love the fact that I don’t have to heat my house up, but I can still have a warm home-cooked meal ready for dinner. Chocolate Pudding Layer Dessert

This is one of our family favorites. I especially love it in the Spring and Summertime! I am sure this recipe is floating out there, but it is too yummy for anyone to miss out on so I thought I would share. It has three layers of goodness: a pecan crust, a cream cheese layer, and a chocolate pudding layer. Just a warning:: It does take some refrigeration so make sure to leave yourself enough time. Enjoy! {Chocolate Pudding Layer Dessert} Pecan Crust 1 cup chopped pecans 1 cup flour 1/2 cup butter Mix pecans, flour, and butter and press into a 9×13 pan. Bake at 300 for 20-25 minutes. Cool. {Visiting Teaching Handout for June}

Wanna know the secret to wanting to get your visiting teaching done each month? Take your ladies a fun cute treat/handout. I have loved visiting teaching but since I started making cute handouts I can’t wait to go! There are tons of fun sites out there that have great ideas. For the month of June the message is on the Sacrament and I just didn’t find anything that I loved so this is what I came up with. It’s a little Sacrament booklet with quotes about the Sacrament, our Savior, and the covenants we make by partaking of the Sacrament. (If you would like to know more about the visiting teaching program please visit http://www.lds.org/.) Here is what you’ll need: a small picture of Christ (I got mine at Deseret Book) white card stock a brad a piece of vellum I printed out the quotes that I liked best. I actually found some that weren’t in the lesson but I [Read More...]

Jewelry Frame

I have been asking my husband for a Jewelry box for just about 10 years now. I keep looking to tell him what I want and just can’t find something that is big enough for what I have, but small enough that it doesn’t take up too much room. Oh, and I want it to be cute and not grandma looking. Tall order huh? I was flipping through Real Simple Magazine when I saw this genius idea. I just had to make it. Here are the supplies you need: An old frame cardboard or foam core material in velvet or another fun fabric, or textured wallpaper (which I used, and you will need to paint and glue). and straight pins. First off I cut some cardboard to make the backing in the size of the frame. I made an 8×10 for this one, but I plan on making a larger size. I cut the wallpaper to match the size of [Read More...]

{Homemade Cleaner} Tip of the Week

I am such a dork, but I hate to buy dumb things like kitchen cleaner (especially since my hubby put me on a strict “spending plan”). I have forever wanted to make my own to be a little more green, and even have all the supplies I would need. Well I finally did it. You would never believe how easy it is, and it works better than any cleaners I have used. Here you go: Kitchen Cleaner 2 TBLS Ammonia 2 TBLS dish liquid 1 quart water I mixed it all in an empty cleaner bottle I had. Let me know what you think, or if you have other great green homemade cleaner recipes. Enjoy!

{Giveaway #6 Morse Code Bracelet Set}

I am so excited for this giveaway, but I am sad that it is our final one. Don’t worry. We will be doing giveaways here and there. Stay tuned for those. My giveaway is something that I really love and I hope you will enjoy it too. It is a pair of Morse Code bracelets, one for mom and your little lady. They look just as cute as any other beaded bracelet, but these babies have meaning to them. The words on the bracelets are LOVE, JOY, and CHERISH. The Morse Code comes in with the silver beads. The round beads are the dots, and the sliver line beads are the dashes, with the pink beads being used as spacers. I will do a tutorial later on these so watch for it. They are super fun for Young Women and Activity Days activities. To enter, leave a comment. For extra entries leave a separate comment for each of the following: [Read More...]

{Growth Charts}

growthchart5

I have been looking for a great growth chart a few years, but couldn’t find anything that would work for me.  I love the vinyl ones, but don’t want to leave it behind if we ever move.  There are other cute fabric and wood charts out there, but the prices kept me away.  Wood Connection to the rescue.  This was my answer! Here is what you will need: a wooden board paint vinyl lines and numbers wood letters for the name (you could also do vinyl if you wanted) a ruler pencil scrapbook paper Mod Podge I found this 5’x2′ wooden board at Wood Connection. It is really cute and has beveled edges. I painted each board and then began to measure. I wanted to start the chart at their birth height and then just go up from there. I put the foot marks on first and then added my numbers to that. After those were on, I put the [Read More...]

Red Velvet and Cream Cheese Cupcakes

This is a late Valentine’s Day post, but I thought these looked so yummy. I had a box of Red Velvet cake mix that I bought on accident so this was the perfect chance to use it. I found this idea on Lick The Bowl Good, but I had to add my own twist to it from our family recipes. I think these would be really fun for a Valentine’s party and read to the bottom to see my idea twist for St. Patty’s Day. Here are the directions: Red Velvet Cake/Cupcakes 1 1/2 cups of sugar 1/2 cup (1 stick) of butter, room temperature 2 eggs, room temperature 2 1/3 cups of cake flour 2 tablespoons of Dutch-processed cocoa powder 1 teaspoon of baking soda 1 teaspoon of baking powder 1/2 teaspoon of salt 1 cup of buttermilk* 1 1/2 tablespoons of red food coloring 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract 1 teaspoon of distilled white vinegar (Or you could [Read More...]

Christmas Handprint Ornaments

I am always looking for fun, different gift ideas for grandparents. Last year Jamie had this darling idea for making these cute hand print reindeer. LOVED them and I love having them on my tree. Seeing the tiny hand print of my then 3 month old is so fun. I just wished that I would have made one for her grandparents. That is why I thought this would be so much fun. What you will need: some acrylic paint plain ornaments a marker to write the name of the child and the year for the hand print I just painted each of the girl’s hands and had them wrap their fingers around a plain ornament. Too cute! I did one in a red and one green. I wrote the name and year on each ornament. I can’t wait to have the grandparents open these. I am dying at how cute they turned out! Merry Christmas!

Christmas Ornament Wreath

I am super excited about Christmas crafts. I couldn’t wait to get this one started. My cousin made one of these and I thought I would give it a shot. Here is what you need. A wire hanger (free! How great is that?) A bunch of non-breakable ornaments (I gone mine at the dollar store. I bought 9 packs and still need to get a few more.) You could also use some glue to keep these in place once you have it all done. Okay. After having a few ornaments fall off, I would recommend gluing for sure. I would glue the tops of the ornaments onto the ornaments. After you have done that, you can begin the rest of the process. Open up and straighten out your hanger. Start to send the ornaments down the hanger through the holders on top. Put on as many ornaments as you need/want for your wreath. Bend your hanger back up and twist [Read More...]

{Felt Flowers}

Hi. I’m Becky, another one of the Crafty Chicks here. I have two little chickadees, a 3-year old and a 1-year-old, both girls. They keep me running, but I love it. I enjoy cooking, crafting, having fun with my family, and girl’s nights out. I love creating and feel like we all need to create something every once in a while as an outlet. I just get so giddy once I create something and want to share it with all my friends. That’s why Jamie and I started this blog. We wanted a place to share all the fun ideas we have with each other and all our crafty friends. We are happy to have you all stop by and hope that you enjoy our crafting.As a mother of girls, I am constantly doing hair. I love finding cute, new, different things to put in their hair that makes them stand out. Enter the felt flower. I was getting tired [Read More...]

Bread in a Bag

I don’t know about you, but I certainly have an anxious helper when it comes to cooking. We did this activity for the Activity Day girls in my ward and I decided that I wanted my little helper to try it out too. She loved it and we had a yummy loaf of bread to enjoy. The best part….no messy clean-up. When we did this with the Activity Day girls, we taught them about measuring and reading the directions. You could do a mini-cooking lesson with your kids too. Enjoy! Bread in a Bag INGREDIENTS 3 cups all-purpose flour, divided 3 tablespoons white sugar 1 (.25 ounce) package rapid rise yeast , or 1 TBLS 1 cup warm water 3 tablespoons non-fat dry milk 3 tablespoons oil 1 1/2 teaspoons salt DIRECTIONS In a large resealable freezer bag, combine 1 cup of flour, sugar, yeast and warm water. Squeeze most of the air out of the bag, and seal. Squish [Read More...]

{Crib Bumper}

I feel as though my creative juices have started to flow once again since I had my baby. I think it all started with this crib bumper. I purchased a mini-crib (instead of converting to a full sized bed, it converts to a twin), from Cuddle Haven and I think it is the cutest thing in the world. It will also be useful once I move our sweet baby into the regular sized crib and my toddler into the twin bed. (Someone was thinking when they invented these.) I found myself needing a bumper pad so I jumped online and found this site with great directions. Here are a couple pictures of the finished product.

{Freezer Meals} Part II

I have had a couple people ask about the recipes that we used for our freezer meals. For our group, we just meet together about a week before hand and decided what we want to try. Some of us have frozen these meals before and know that they will work. Other recipes we are just trying out. So if you are getting a group together, talk about maybe 5-6 different things to try. We just got together again and we are going to make some steak fajitas and leave them in a Ziploc baggie with the marinade and then have another baggie with the bell peppers, onions and some more marinade. So just think about things that you would like to make your family and most things will freeze. There are a lot of websites out there with great recipe ideas as well. Hope this helps.

{Crayon Rolls}

For our Project Group this month, we made these darling crayon rolls/crayon cozies. Too cute. Bailey has been wanting one ever since she saw the cute one Arien made for her kids, at church. Bailey loves to take the crayons out and put them back in the spots. Too fun. I was really in love with my fabric too. I got it at Hobby Lobby and it is dang cute. We got the instructions from Skip to my Lou, but we did learn a few tricks along the way to make it easier. Enjoy.

Freezer Meals

I don’t know about many of you, but I have such a hard time deciding what to cook and then having the motivation to actually cook. At our last project group my friend Kristin, was telling us how she and some of her friends had started to make freezer meals so they could save time and money…and not stress about dinner. I jumped on board. So last Saturday night a group of us got together and made 6 meals, Chicken Cordon Bleu, Chicken Parmesana, Chicken Broccoli Casserole, Chicken Rollups, Lasagna rolls, Ham and potatoes, and pulled pork. We got at least 16 meals out of this and it only ended up costing each of us $91.60. I don’t know about you, but that is one trip to the grocery store for me if I am loading up. So here are the details so you can start if you want. Get a group of girls together. (We had 5 total, I [Read More...]

Burp Cloths

We have this fun little project group in our neighborhood. We try to get together once a month, and one person is in charge so that we can hopefully get a project completed and not have one more thing we need to get done sitting around the house. It has been so much fun so far. In June we made these darling burp cloths out of cloth diapers. They turned out really cute and were pretty easy, as far as sewing goes. It was just the pinning and ironing ahead of time that made them a little more time consuming. So here is a picture of the finished product. (I am using Kristin’s burp cloths cause I haven’t taken pictures of mine yet.) So here are the instructions for making these: You will need about 1 ¼ yards ribbon or rickrack for each burp cloth 6” cut from a bolt of fabric will make 2 burp cloths, or 1 fat [Read More...]

Cute Magnets

Our neighborhood has a fun little project group that has started up. The idea is to make fun things that we can get done in one night and do it cheap!!! It has worked so far. We made these great magnets. They were super easy and only cost $1.35 for 6!!! To make these, you need the clear glass “rocks”, strong round magnets, scrapbook paper or scrap material, and some Glass & bead glue. Cut your fabric or paper to the size of your rocks. Use your glue to dab onto the paper and add it to your rock on the flat side and let dry. Once they are dry add a dab of the glue to your magnet and place on the paper.  Let that dry and you are all set. They come together really fast. I just love having something that looks great on my fridge instead of a bunch of ugly magnets.

{Molten Chocolate Cake}

Molten_Chocolate_Cakes
