This summer I was able to help plan our church’s girls camp for the 12-18 old girls in our area. The adult leaders worked with the youth camp leaders to plan a 4 day camp. Our YCL’s thought having a cowgirl themed camp sounded like a lot of fun. So the adult leaders set to work coming up with a way to tie the cowgirl theme into a learning and spiritual experience for everyone. Our leader had the idea of basing camp on Johnny Lingo’s 8 cow woman. If you’ve never heard of Johnny Lingo you can watch the original movie, or enjoy the newer movie on Netflix or Amazon. After we explained Johnny Lingo to the YCL’s they were excited about being “8 COW-Girls” so we ran with it.
After watching either movie you would probably think a tropical island theme would be the no brainer way to go, but we had a lot of fun using it in a wild west way. Here are somethings we did:
Young Woman Values and Theme Banner: The bright colors fit right in with our spray painted banners and we hung these value flags from Mormon Modern around the pavilion as well with clothespins.
Stick Horses: Our main craft was having each girl make their stick horse. Every horse turned out unique! We later used these for a stick horse rodeo.
Camp shirts: We modified this Lingo Certified logo to read 8 COW GIRL instead of 8 COW WOMAN and added swirls behind it. Our main goal in designing the shirts was to create something the girls would wear again, so we had them printed on girl cut tees and put the logo on the hip.
Melodramas: Instead of skits we performed melodramas. Which were a lot of fun. Plus look how fun this stage is we had to perform on!
Tuck in Treats: It is tradition to give the girls treats at bedtime. Because of wild animals we had to keep all food out of the tents, so we gave these ponytail holders on the first night. The second night we gave little denim pillows with this girl and horse out of iron on vinyl on them.
High Noon Shoot Out: We filled a canoe with water in the middle of the meadow and handed out water guns for an all out water fight.
Cowboy Duet: We were entertained one night by this duet who played, sang and told stories.
We also divided the girls into 3 teams and had a dutch oven dessert cook off. (My team may have won!)
Every day we used a quote from the new movie and had devotionals that tied in with them.
Other than a couple of incidents with squirrels we had a great time!
