Beat the Heat at Disneyland During Summer
Hey everyone! It’s Kimberly with Get Away Today, here to share some of my favorite tips on visiting Disneyland during summer. Disneyland is my favorite place, and summer also happens to be my favorite season. There’s something magical about combining the two. Whether you’re visiting at the very beginning or just as summer is fading into fall, these tips will help you beat the heat at Disneyland.
There’s so much magic to be found at the Happiest Place on Earth during the summer months – especially when you save on your Disneyland tickets. Longer park hours, more entertainment, and nightly fireworks are just a few of the things that make Disneyland during summer so enchanting.
Summer also brings out the bright sun and high temperatures in California. That doesn’t have to ruin your fun, though! In fact, I have all the best tips on how to beat the heat at Disneyland during summer. Here’s what you can do to avoid the sun melting your fun:
Get wet. This is probably an obvious one, but some of my favorite rides in the park leave the whole family soaked. You can visit your Laughing Place with Briar Rabbit on Splash Mountain or brave the wild waves on Grizzly River Rapids. If your little ones aren’t ready for the bigger rides, they can cool off at the Princess Dot Puddle Park in “a bug’s land.” Disney has thought of nearly everything when it comes to keeping guests cool in Disneyland during summer.
Relax. The parks offer some great areas to kick back and rest your feet, both in the shade and inside buildings with A/C. One of my favorite spots is the Animation Academy in Disney California Adventure Park. Here, you’ll be able to sit with nice, cool air conditioning blowing and snippets of Disney movies surround you. There are also some fun things for the family to do. Learn how to draw a Disney character or visit the Beast’s Library.
The restaurants are another fun option for beating the heat in Disneyland during summer. Finding a shady table, enjoying some delicious food and people watching is always a good idea. Or, schedule a Character Dining meal. Many of the breakfast choices offer later reservation times that could serve as a brunch or lunch. The Princess Celebration at Ariel’s Grotto serves lunch until late afternoon. Goofy’s Kitchen normally serves brunch until 2 or 3pm before dinner service around 5pm. Your family will love getting to meet the characters without the lines or hot sun!
No matter whether you’re staying at one of the three Disney hotels, or one nearby, a midday break can really help you beat the heat. Of course it’s ideal to be within walking distance, but most hotel shuttles run throughout the day as well. The hottest part of the day is always the best for naps and swimming. With my kids, a midday break is a must!
Take a ride. Many of the rides in Disneyland are either air conditioned, fast enough to create a lovely breeze, or both! If you’re trying to beat the heat at Disneyland during summer, you can’t go wrong with iconic rides like Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, “it’s a small world” or the Little Mermaid – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure. If your family is brave enough, Space Mountain, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and California Screamin’ are all great choices. You’ll be flying and dropping so fast that you won’t even be able to feel the summer heat!
Watch a show. Disneyland has some of the best entertainment you can find, which is perfect for beating the heat at Disneyland during summer. Whether it’s Frozen – Live at the Hyperion, Disney Jr. Dance Party or Mickey and the Magical Map, you’re sure to be entertained while keeping cool. There’s nothing better than watching stunning shows while getting to rest inside or in the shade. Plus, if you take my midday break advice, you’ll be ready for some nighttime entertainment when things have cooled down a bit.
I suggest getting ready for after-dark entertainment early, especially if you’re hoping to get a spot with a seat. Even if you are standing for the Disneyland fireworks or World of Color, each show is so spectacular you won’t be able to focus on anything else.
Be prepared. If you’re visiting Disneyland during summer, you know that temperatures will be higher. It’s always important to drink lots of water and keep yourself hydrated, but even more so in the summer heat. Be prepared by bringing a refillable water bottle into the park for the family. I love my Hydroflask because it keeps ice cool all day long, but there are lots of different brands you can try. Just look for water bottles with vacuum insulated stainless steel.
There are water bottle refill stations located in both parks, and any of the quick service restaurants will give you a free glass of ice water anytime you ask. Remember to consistently take drink breaks, no matter how you do it. You can even set an alarm on your phone if you’re afraid you’ll forget. Your whole family will be happier – and safer – if you remember to keep hydrated at Disneyland during summer.
