Frozen Yogurt Topping Bar

Topping bars are awesome because they cater to everyone’s tastes! We’ve done a pizza bar, pasta bar, baked potato bar, and hot dog bar before with great success. So when I was planning our dessert for a church activity I knew that I wanted to have a topping bar and frozen yogurt is so popular that I knew it would be a hit! I picked up some toppings and made a chalkboard art sign and it was a hit. I had teenagers oohing and awwing over the fruit even after we ran out of frozen yogurt and the Reese’s they were getting back in line for more blueberries, strawberries and kiwi. So I’m going to count this as a smashing hit.

I’ve been a long time admirer of chalkboard art, but I’m not confident enough in my handwriting and proportion skills to every try it on a real chalkboard. Well Elmer’s new chalkboard foam core to the rescue! It’s a chalkboard that let’s you cheat! To get this look I first designed the wording on the computer, then printed it out. You can see I had to tape pages together cause this board is 20″ x 30″. Next, I just traced over the outline of the letters. The pressure from the pencil was enough to leave a slight indentation on the board, enough that I could see it.

Then I traced around it with my chalk. To get a nice tip on the chalk, just use a cheap pencil sharpener and sharpen the chalk like you would a pencil or crayon.

I’m a lefty, so writing on chalkboards has always been a problem since my hand smears whatever I write. But the foam core was light enough that I could rotate it to my hand from smearing.

Once I had the outline finished I just filled in the letters.

I can’t tell you how many people commented on my perfectly formed letters–that I totally cheated making.

Ice cream cups from Bake it Pretty got a customized look with the help of a black painters marker. Once again I printed off my wording and traced around it with a pencil. And then traced over the indentations with the painter.

I picked up a few cartons of frozen yogurt in the ice cream section. I don’t think it was as good as the stuff you get from the yogurt shops but no one seemed to mind.

I polled our Facebook followers what their favorite frozen yogurt toppings were. Big thanks to everyone who answered! Fruits came back as the winner, but chocolate wasn’t far behind.

In case you need some ideas, here’s the list I made from the responses:

Strawberries, blueberries, cookie dough, chopped up Reese’s cups, chopped Oreo’s, sour worms, sour patch kids, hot fudge, whipped cream, wet walnuts, pecans/peanuts/almonds, sprinkles, caramel sauce, M&Ms, Reese’s pieces, granola, crumbled brownies, marshmallows, gummy worms, hot fudge, chocolate chips, kiwi, raspberries, cherries, Captain Crunch cereal, peanut butter, graham crackers, waffle cone pieces.

I found these little chalkboard clothes pins at Michael’s and the clothes pin was perfect to slip over the side of the bowls. I think that’s upside down, but it worked really well.
