Michaels Holiday Dream Tree Challenge

In the midst of the posts about gratitude (aren’t the thank you cards from our fellow blogger friends AMAZING?) as well as planning and prepping for Thanksgiving (one of my favorite holidays), I am also starting to gear up for Christmas! Because  Michaels Stores has invited me to be part of their Holiday Dream Tree Challenge happening this week! How fun is that?!?

Yesterday I got a big fun box on my porch with a 6 ft. pre-lit Christmas tree and a gift card courtesy of Michaels, with the challenge to create my dream tree using items from their store. I’m so excited!! As soon as I opened the package I pretty much jumped right into my swagger wagon mini van and headed over to Michaels to check out their selection of goodies. I wanted to share a few of the things that I found–and let me tell you, most of the holiday stuff is 50% off this week so the deals are hot!

Michaels has a large selection of pre-lit high tip count artificial Christmas trees, ranging in size from 24 inches to 7.5 feet tall. I’m a fan of pre-lit and artificial because I’m really bad at keeping indoor plants of any kind alive in my house. Sad but true! Anyway, the trees are all nestled among shelves and racks of sparkly holiday delights! My girls had a blast exploring the ornaments and trying to decide which one was their favorite. I had to pry them away when it was time to leave. . .especially from the mini disco ball ornaments! 😉

I was totally overwhelmed by all of the ornament options–in a good way! What color palette do I want to go with? Classic reds and greens or elegant silvers, whites and golds? Whimsical or simple or rustic? Can I fit in my favorite color turquoise? DECISIONS, DECISIONS. You’ll have to wait and see what I decided on! 🙂 There is something there for everyone’s different style. I found out that Michaels offers Christmas themes—collections designed to simplify and take the guesswork out of decorating with coordinating ornaments, ribbons, embellishments and decor. This is a great idea! The four themes in 2012 are:

Jingle & Jolly Collection

Cedar Lodge Collection

Frankincense Collection

Crystal Elegance Collection

I also found rows and rows of ribbon of every color and size. I was inspired by little wooden plaques, glittery scrapbook paper and tinsel garlands, bottles of sparkly glitter and pretty bells of all colors. What creative things could I make using these? My creative juices were flowing! I’m excited to share what I come up with in a few days!

Along with darling Christmasy scrapbook paper I found some items that weren’t necessarily in the holiday aisles but could be used in fun ways to decorate a tree–mini frames, bakers twine and really cool laser-cut frames? The wheels in my brain are a-turning. . .

Later on this week I’ll share some project ideas and sneak peeks of my process of decorating for this challenge, and then next week I will unveil the finished tree! Stay tuned! 🙂 In the meantime, you can get more great holidays ideas and inspiration by following Michaels Stores on Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest.

  1. I was at Michaels yesterday. I was thinking of your project and trying to imagine what I would do. I might be a little bit jealous but I’m working through it. 🙂 (and I may have bought your birthday present while I was there and it may or may not be turquoise) Ash
