Angry Birds Cupcakes

Angry Bird Movie Cupcakes

Angry Bird Cupcakes and the Naughty Pigs Too

My oldest son turned eight just last week. Gasp. How can it be?

So for his birthday party I decided it would be fun to make him some Angry Birds cupcakes because he loves that game (it’s an iPhone app game that is fun and frustrating and can be slightly very addicting!). I should really add a disclaimer because I am not, I repeat NOT a professional cake decorator. Just a mom trying to make her kid happy. 🙂

Here is the birthday boy himself with his Jimmer jersey (we are BYU alumni and Jimmer fans at our house!) and while I was doubting my cupcake decorating skillz he came into the kitchen and totally loved the cupcakes. So I was thrilled. I’ll share my little tips on how I made these silly birds.

Here are the supplies I used to create the Angry Birds cupcakes. I got most of them at a regular grocery store with my kids helping me strategize. It was a lot of fun coming up with all of the parts and getting creative in the candy aisle!

Angry Birds Cupcakes

** Sprinkles and sugars–I bought the large containers at Orson Gygi because they had the large variety of colors that I wanted.

Angry Birds Cupcakes

** Mini marshmallows: eyeballs and pig teeth

** Mini chocolate chips: eyeball pupils and pig nostrils

** Sugared gummy orange slices: beaks

** Large marshmallows (not shown): cut in slices to make white bellies on the red and blue birdies as well as the pig snouts

Angry Birds Cupcakes

** Black licorice ropes: angry eyebrows (I cut them into about 3/4 inch long pieces with my scissors)

Angry Birds Cupcakes

** Cupcakes in whatever flavor you like. My son chose chocolate.

Angry Birds Cupcakes

** Frosting in red, blue, yellow and green—to make the red a deeper color I used a gel food coloring. You can use store-bought frosting and tint it the different colors or make your own, whatever floats your boat.

Okay, here is how I “built” the birds.

Angry Birds Cupcakes

Frost the cupcake with the base color.

Angry Birds Cupcakes

Add sprinkles or sanding sugar. It was easiest and less messy for me to just dunk the whole cupcake into the container.

Angry Birds Cupcakes

Voila. It sort of looks like feathers?? I liked the texture that sprinkles or sugars added.

Angry Birds Cupcakes

Add the belly. I sliced a large marshmallow into thirds and kind of flattened it to make the belly.

Angry Birds Cupcakes

I cut the orange slices into thirds to make the beaks.

Angry Birds Movie Treats

I smooshed the mini chocolate chips into the mini marshmallows and stuck them into the frosting. I also added the black licorice ropes in an angry position on the face, and then added 2 jelly beans for the top feathers on its head. He looks pretty angry to me. 🙂

Angry Birds Cupcakes

For the pig snouts I cut a large marshmallow in half and frosted it all over with green frosting.

Angry Bird Pig Cupcakes

I put mini chocolate chips in the snout for the nostrils, the eyeballs were mini chocolate chips smooshed on top of the mini marshmallows (the same as with the birds), and for the teeth I snipped a mini marshmallow into smaller pieces. The ears are just green jelly beans. I also added a little bit of green sprinkles. These guys just crack me up!!!! I wish they came with the funny sounds effects like the game. 🙂

I basically did the same thing for each bird or pig. Here they are!

Angry Bird Party Cupcakes

Oh, for the birds’ eggs I just used some malted milk candy eggs from the Easter candy section. 🙂

Angry Bird Pig Cupcakes

No wonder those birds are so angry. Those dang pigs keep stealing their eggs! I’d be grumpy too!

There you have it. Angry Birds cupcakes for the Angry Birds fan in your house. 🙂

  13. I’m planning an angry birds birthday party for my sons right now! I was going to go for a 3-musketeer tower/cake (so they could break it down like the game), but these cupcakes are awesome. I’m also planing a game of life-size angry birds. It’s kind of fun to come up with all the favors on your own since you can’t exactly buy Angry Bird stuff (yet).

  14. Oh my word!!! These are sooo cute!!!! Thanks for sharing how you made them!! I am going to make these this weekend. My 2 boys LOVE playing Angry Birds on their Dad’s phone. Cutest cupcakes ever!! =)

  16. My son just had major surgery and Angry Birds is what saved him (and me) from boredom as he was recovering. 🙂 Wow – he (and his twin brother) are going to LOVE these cupcakes. He is having a Welcome Back party at school this week. We went this morning to get all the stuff you have above so that we can make these cupcakes for his big party. Thank you for your creativity! These are going to bring such happiness to my son and a whole classroom full of children.

      1. Just finished! Oh my goodness, they turned out perfect! The boys loved them and they were so much fun to make as a family. We had a little assembly line going. 🙂 Thanks again!

  17. Absolutely genius! I bought all the supplies last night to make them for my son’s 7th birthday tomorrow. The only thing I couldn’t find were the black licorice ropes, so I’ll just use black gel frosting. Hopefully it works okay. Thanks for the inspiration!

  23. Thank you thank you for sharing, you are so very creative they are almost too adorable to eat, I recently went to a bakery to see if they could make some angry bird cupcakes and they quoted me $90 something for 24 cupcakes! I’m sure they would of been amazing, but thanks to you I think I can pull it off for fraction of the cost and have fun making them 🙂

  24. How creative you are! My kids will die (and dad too). I am thinking this would be a fun summer surprise. Thank you for sharing.

  25. Love these, lol! You did amazing. Going to try and make them for my 14 year olds baseball party (they won the championship). I think they will find it funny 🙂

  26. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I had been searching and searching for a SIMPLE (as in non-fondant) Angry Bird cupcake(preferably)/cake decorating idea and was well on my way to becoming an ANGRY MOM (because my joyfilled thoughts of making a happy birthday for my six-turning-seven year old were being STOLEN by FONDANT), when I found you! Given all the applause you have received, I believe you should consider yourself both “maker of happy children” and “professional cake decorator”. It is much easier to be clever with fondant (given its inherit qualities), but true talent lies in being skilled in the fine art of improvisation. Congratulations!

  27. I’M THE ULTIMATE ANGRY BIRDS FAN #1 NOBODY’S MORE OF A FAN OF ANGRY BIRDS THEN ME. THANKS FOR THE RECAPIE ITS THE BOMB

  28. Thank you so much for posting this. My son’s 6th birthday is coming up and he said he wanted Angry Birds cupcakes. I looked a lot of other templates and they all looked way more time consuming and difficult than this one. Can’t wait to make these. Looks like fun!

  29. Thank you! My kids’ bdays are 9 days apart so we always have 1 big party for both of them. It’s hard to find something an almost 10yo girl and an almost 5yo boy will agree on, but they both liked your cupcakes and can’t wait to help make them for the party!

  30. Thanks so much for sharing your great idea! Am making these for my son’s 8th birthday this weekend! Thanks for making it look so simple that I’m not stressing out about going for it!

  31. Thanks so much for this! The cupcakes turned out great! Not as perfect as yours, but still very cute. And I got tons of compliments on them. Instead of doing pig cupcakes though, I used leftover batter and made a small cake (think 1st bday size) and decorated it like the king pig. Then I put all the Angry Birds around him.

  32. Thank you so much for this post! My son has been asking for me to make Angry Bird cupcakes and this recipe seems like one I could actually do. Much appreciated 🙂

  33. WOW!!! I LOVE them!!! My son is turning 6 on Sept 14th, and asked for an “Angry Bird Party”… these look super easy and look awesome!!! I was going to use fontant, but usually the kids don’t like that (not to mention it’s more expensive). Thank you for posting this!!! 🙂

  34. I made these for my son’s 5th birthday. He loved them! I made a cupcake stand like one of the levels of the game and it was a huge hit too. Thank you so much for the idea!

  35. AWESOME!!! My son turns 8 in January and he asked for an Angry Birds party. Thanks to you I no longer have to worry about the cake.

  36. I loved your idea and I made them! My son’s party is today and he is excited about the cupcakes! I’m with you on I’m sure if I adjust here and there they would look better but my son thinks there amazing and the coolest things ever! So I guess that’s all that matters. I can’t wait to see what the other kids think. Thanks a million for posting your idea!

  37. thanks! these are wonderful! can we do this on MINI cupcakes? And how do you make the top of the cupcakes come out flat? 😀

    1. Erica, I bet if you got really tiny candies/marshmallows you could totally do mini cupcakes! How cute. And I didn’t really mess with the cupcakes, I think they just sort of came out of the oven flat, lol! 🙂

  38. We are having an Angry Birds party for my 27 year old friend next week and I’m going to make these!! They’re great.

I was just wondering what size the cupcakes are – I normally make fairly big cupcakes that look bigger than yours. But in the pictures they don’t look fairy cake size. Can you help!! Thanks

    1. I just made the cupcakes in a regular sized cupcake/muffin pan with regular sized cupcake liners. Hope that helps! Good luck with your party, how fun! 🙂

  39. I’ll have this open for the next few hours, while I try my hand at these awesome cupcakes 🙂
A friend who can actually bake will be helping me, but I don’t know that they’ll look this good in the end. Thanks for the info!

  40. These cupcakes are AWESOME!!!!!! Thank you so much for sharing your amazing talent!!!! My son is going to be soooooo happy!!!!

I just have one question how did you made the lil eggs?! Theyre cool.

  45. My 4 year old daughter told me she wanted an angry bird theme for her upcoming 5th birthday. These cupcakes are beyond adorable!! Awesome job!

  46. OMG — Brooke these look really cool and pretty straight forward to make. I will be trying your recipe this Friday for my 11 year old son’s bday party. I will let you know how they turned out. Thanks for sharing!

  47. I turned these into sugar cookies because my kids aren’t fans of cupcakes. HUGE, HUGE applause from my daughter’s 1st grade class for her birthday treat. My son can’t wait for his birthday so I will make them again for his 3rd grade class. Thank you very much for listing how you made these; I am the coolest mom on earth for today.

  48. I am very impressed by these cupcakes and cant wait to make them for my sons 5th birthday. They are sure to be a hit! The great part is it is not complicated and the ingredients are not hard to find. Bravo and thanks for sharing your ideas it make my job and other mom’s jobs alot easier.

  49. I found this while googling “Angry Bird Cupcakes”! My son is going to be five in a week and a half, and I want to make him something special on his actual birthday since I have to work. You are so talented-thank you for posting this!!!! 🙂

  50. Thank you for this great idea. I made them for my nephew’s 4th b-day party this last weekend and they were a hit.

  52. Will definitely attempt these! Soooo cute! My 5 year old LOVES (on the brink of obsession??) Angry Birds! His bday is in March so this is perfect! Thanks!

  53. I just wanted to say THANK YOU for posting this great article. Not only are the cupcakes fantastic…your instructions and photos were super helpful! My son had his 6th birthday party last Saturday and the theme of his party was Angry Birds. When we found your cupcakes, we had to make them! Using your techniques, we added the “Bomb Bird” since that’s his favorite. I put a link to a photo so you can see the flock of Angry Birds we made for his party. They were a huge hit with the kids and the parents. Thanks again!

  54. I think these are so cute and I’m about to make them for my son’s 5th birthday tomorrow. I’m wondering if I can decorate them the day before and store in refrigerator? Does anyone know if the cupcakes with be okay (decorative-wise and taste-wise) if I do this? I have to make about 50 cupcakes and would prefer to do it the night before.
    Thank you for any help.

    1. Mindy: Yes! I made these the night before for my son’s birthday & they were perfect. I actually thought it was really good to refrigerate them at least overnight as it gave the icing & decorations a chance to “set” a bit before serving.

      1. Thank you. This comment was helpful. I wasn’t sure if they would hold or not. I ended up making the cupcakes the day before the party and decorating them the day of the party. It did take awhile since I had to do 50, but wasn’t too bad….and totally worth it. Everyone loved the cupcakes. I had some left over and put them in fridge and took them to school for my son two days later and they were still good!
Thank you all for the wonderful ideas!

  55. I made these for my son’s 6th birthday at school. They were a huge, huge hit! Thanks so much. My kids had a great time helping me make them too.

  56. Love them Thanks for sharing !! it looks very easy , I will be making them for my son’s B-day he really likes angry birds!! =)

  57. My sister in law and I successfully duplicated ( to the best of our ability) these wonderful Angry Birds cupcakes for my 4 yr old’s party yesterday. Every small child who knew of Angry Birds was at our table and everyone just adored the pigs (go figure). They turned out amazing. Thank you so much for posting this, you helped make my son’s birthday a blast!!

  58. Love these! I am making them tomorrow for a bake sale at my son’s school. Only problem is I can’t find the black licorice anywhere!!! I’ve tried 6 stores…have a few more to try. The only other thought I had was to melt tootsie rolls, then roll them real thin and freeze them. Any other suggestions?? I’ll figure something out!

    1. Angela: I couldn’t find the black licorice “string” either. I ended up using regular black licorice vines. I took a paring knife & sliced strips from the vine. This worked well! Good luck!

  59. oh my god!!! i am absolutley in love with these and i am making the red ones for my home ec lesson!! thank you for finding an easy way to make these

  60. I just made these for my son’s half birthday celebration at school, as he has a summer birthday. They turned out great thanks to your detailed directions, and were the hit of his school! Now everyone wants to know how to make them. Thank you, Wendy

  61. I was going to pay for someone to make an angry bird cake for my son’s party but thanks to you I’m gonna give these a try! They are adorable!! Good job!

  62. These are way to cute, I just had a hysterectomy and my sons 3rd birthday is only a few days away. He loves and I mean loves the angry birds, I think we have almost all of the plush toys. I will be making these for his party, and it looks so easy I won’t be in much pain doing it. Thank you so much for sharing this, you can’t find angry birds cakes or cupcakes anywhere. Thanks again for the wonderful idea….

  63. Hi! I love the cupcakes! Very cute:) I was just wondering where you found the black licorice ropes? Thanks!

  64. So cute. (I mean, cool. My son gets upset when I think things are cute when they’re supposed to be cool) Time-consuming, but not nearly as difficult as some of the elaborate professionally made Angry Birds cakes I’ve seen. I think this may be a real hit for my soon to be 6 year-old.

  65. Thank you for this idea! Made these for my nephews 7th birthday today. He saw them and said it looks just like the game! I made a king pig by cutting a Reese mini in half, keeping the gold foil on for the crown. I used one cookie sheet to display 24 cupcakes. Then I used another to make a scene from the game. I put light blue construction paper for the sky and green for the grass. Then I put clear plastic wrap down. I created the wood using pretzel rods with a little icing to keep it in place on the plastic wrap. Then more pretzel rods for the sling shot. I put a bird on the ground, one on the sling shot, and one flying through the air. There was king pig with the eggs in the structure. Mind you, this was all flat but it really did look like a picture straight from the game!!!!

  66. Thank you for the great ideas!!!! My twins are going to love them!!!!!! Hope mine turn out as cute!!!

  67. I am making these tomorrow for my sons 4th birthday party. I am very excited! I couldnt find an Angry Birds cake anywhere, and I stumbled across this on Pinterest! What a fantastic idea!! So creative. Thank you for posting this!!!

  68. Hi, I dont hate angry birds but do not love them. However, my sister LOVES the game and that’s her favorite theme ever. She’s turning 14 nxt week and i found your website. (Thank god!) And i love it im facinated that u have all the pictures and clarified what you have so i can make the best angry birds cupcakes ever for her. Anyways she saw the pics and freaked out saying “YES!!!! i want these cupcakes so badly!!!” And yes I’m 12 years old lol 🙂 thanks so much 🙂

  69. I love these and will be making them tomorrow for my boyfriend’s son’s 7th birthday party on Saturday. Brooke, can you tell me how far in advance I can decorate the cupcakes? I’m worried about the sugar sprinkles bleeding into the frosting, but maybe I shouldn’t worry because the frosting is dyed. Unsure, so I appreciate any insight you can provide. Again, kudos on such creative and fun cupcakes!

    1. Eryn, I’m so glad you like them! Good luck with the party! You’ll be totally fine making them this far in advance, you’re right, since the frosting is tinted the same color as the sprinkles I think you won’t have any problems with bleeding colors. Thanks for commenting! 🙂

  70. I have been to many sites looking for angrybird cupcake ideas but these directions and visuals are the best. I love the way you add special shortcuts to the recipe. Am deffinately using if for my 8 year old b-day next Saturday. Thanks

  71. I’m planning to make these for my son’s bday party this weekend, but having trouble finding the red sprinkles, orange slices, and black licorice. Any suggestions? (I don’t have enough time to order anything online!!) Thanks!

    1. Hi AMS~ I saw your post wondering where to buy some of the ingredients. Depending on your location, Wal-Mart has the red sprinkles as well as the orange slices. As far as the black licorice, I looked everywhere(I’m from Iowa, and didn’t have much luck), but I have a friend who found some in a candy store in Conneticut. Just thought I’d share this info.:)

  72. These are awesome!! I have been looking for ideas for my son’s birthday, he loves angry birds!! A tip that I discovered while making frog cupcakes, if you want to add a crown to the pigs then you cut it out of a yellow starburst. Thanks for the ideas. By the way, we are huge BYU fans here also, GO COUGS!!!

  73. Hi AMS~ I saw your post wondering where to buy some of the ingredients. Depending on your location, Wal-Mart has the red sprinkles as well as the orange slices. 74. I’m going to try to make these cupcakes for my sons birthday on Tuesday.. Thank you for posting them.. I like how you went step by step that will help me alot…

  75. FINALLY! An Angry Birds Cupcake recipe without yucky fondant! I can work with it, but it takes forever, is expensive and doesn’t taste very good – these are bound to be a hit at my sons 7 year old party next week 🙂

  76. Thanks so much! I’m in agreement with the rave reviews. We will celebrate my son’s 5th birthday tomorrow and we’ve had a lot of fun decorating the cupcakes after going back to view yours several times. We added the boomerang bird as that is his favorite. Thanks for sharing your great ideas, pictures and instructions.

  77. I made the cupcakes for my son’s 5th birthday party and they were so cute! Thank you for sharing your technique and ideas. We used sprinkles for all 3 birds and found some pre-made eyes at the cake store to speed up the building process a little. We couldn’t find narrow black licorice for the eyebrows so we cut up regular licorice. Thanks again!

  78. I am so excited to have found this post! My son is turning 7 next week and we are planning an Angry Birds party! All the other cakes I found were fondant cakes which look great but don’t taste great (in my opinion!) These cupcakes are adorable and look doable. Thanks so much for posting this!

  79. My soon to be 7 year old daughter is having a angry bird party on july 14,2012. And i am going to try your cupcakes out for her party! i hope they turn out as good as yours. thanks for the idea!

  80. Those cupcakes are so adorable I am definitely stealing the idea for my soon to be 7yr olds bday party thanks.

  81. Thanks for such a great idea, and for the step by step tutorial! I’m writing down the supplies to make these for my son’s 4th birthday this weekend! 🙂

  82. Just made these for my 8 year old!!! Thank you for posting this! They were so much fun to make and were a hit!!

  83. Thank u so much for this awesome idea I put these cupcakes bookmarked in my iPhone for 2 months so that I could make them for my sons birthday I just made them and they came out great he’s gonna be so happy I can’t thank u enough

  84. I love this idea and it seems so easy. I doubt I can mess this up. I plan to use it this weekend for my son’s birthday.

  85. Thanks for the post! I just made these for my son for his 7th birthday!! It was really fun to put them together!

Eggs from the Easter candy section are a bit hard to come by in September 🙂 but I found that white Jordan almonds make a pretty good substitute. I also made black birds (because they are my son’s favorite.) Just used the same basic technique with dark chocolate frosting/black sanding sugar. For that little ‘fuse’ crest the black ones have, I microwaved a little bit of the yellow frosting so it was warm and runny, then dipped the ends of black licorice pieces in the yellow frosting and set them on wax paper to cool off. Then I pressed them into the black cupcakes.

  86. These are awesome! My son’s party is on the 29th and I plan on making these. Just wondering why you didn’t use yellow, blue and green sprinkles as well? Was it just preference or because it wouldn’t have worked as well? Did you find it harder to stick the eyes, belly, etc to the sprinkled cupcakes?

    1. Mainly preference, I like the taste of the sugar over the sprinkles generally, and I wanted different textures and I just grabbed what I saw at the store. Both work fine, the things probably do stick better in the sugar than the sprinkles, but it all worked out fine. Hope that helps!

  87. Thank you for sharing this! My son age turning 6 requested this for his bday….these are probably the cutest ones I have seen and something I can implement with my three kids 6 and under! Thank you, I appreciate it!

  88. I made these cupcakes and they were so easy and a big hit. Everyone especially my grandson loved them. I had to use the sugar sprinkles because I could not find the regular sprinkles. Anyway they turned out fantastic. Thank you.

  89. I just made your cupcakes! They were so easy and fun! Thank you so much for sharing your step by step directions on how to make them! I can’t wait for my son to see them at his birthday tomorrow!

  90. my son isturning 4 this week & reached out via fb that l was going to attempt to do some kind of Angry Bird cupcake. Well, l got FLOODED with theses little cuties from all my girls! So, they are baking & l will be doing my best to make you proud with my version this afternoon. Thank you so much!

  91. These are adorable! My son is turning seven and he saw these and knew he had to have them. Thanks for the great instructions! I’ll be hitting Gygi this week week for the sprinkles!

  92. I thing I know what we’re doing for my son’s birthday party now. Thanks!! I loved that you used the super technical term “smooshed”. Now you’re speaking my language. And, lovin’ the Jimmer jersey. Go Cougs!!

  93. great idea! thanks for sharing. ill try to make these for my not so baby boy’s 5th birthday coming up. what else did you do at the birthday party? games? food? thanks for any suggestions. glad i stumbled onto your blog!
