Moon Sand

Moon Sand or Moldable Sand is a great way to get kids using their hands for a sensory experience. It’s easy enough to make and will keep the kids busy for hours.Moon sand with rocket and astronaut as play toys.

We love finding ways to keep the kids busy with sensory activities. There are so many ways for them to learn when they are able to touch and feel different textures and use different mediums.

One of our family favorites is Moon Sand, or moldable sand. We like to make it and put it in a plastic container with a lid, or in an old cookie sheet.

This is a great activity to use outside, or somewhere you don’t mind having a little sand. I’d keep it away from your couches and beds at all cost.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own Moon Sand:

I’ll put the printable recipe below, but here are the step by step instructions.

Step 1:

Add the sand, 4 1/2 cups, into a large mixing bowl.

Step 2:

Add the cornstarch, 1 1/2 cups, and mix together.

Step 3:

Add in the water, starting with about 1 cup and adding more as needed to get to your desired consistency.

Feel free to experience with the ingredients until you make it what you and your kids like.

Kids will have a blast with this moon sand.

Ingredients
  • 4½ cups play sand, really fine sand
  • 1½ cups cornstarch
  • 1¼ cups water
Instructions
  1. Mix together the sand and cornstarch.
  2. Add in about 1 cup water and stir.
  3. Continue adding the water until you have the desired consistency.
  4. You can experiment with the ingredient amounts until you get it exactly how you like it.
