Two Tone Kitchen Reveal

With a handful of paint chips and the Sherwin-Williams Color Visualizer to try out the colors with, I quickly whittled my options down to Peppercorn. But then, the second guessing started so on my trip to buy paint, I decided to ask the Sherwin-Williams staff for their opinion. The girl there was so helpful and asked me questions about the space and what I was after. I wanted a color that could take a beating since little feet sit in this space and leave kick marks. Also, the adjoining room has a lot of color in it. There’s an orange zebra rug that is pretty much an attention hog, and I didn’t want a color that would compete with it. Also, we have light gray bar stools, and I wanted a color that would make them stand out. She recommended using a complementary color, and we settled on Peppercorn (just like the Color Visualizer had). See part 1 of the process here.

I loved that when I described that I was looking for a color that would “ground” the kitchen, she knew exactly what I was talking about. My husband, on the other hand, looked confused when I used the word, but she totally got it! It’s so nice to work with people who speak my language! After I had the color in hand, I needed to make a choice of which line of paint to use. I went with the staff recommended, Emeraldâ„¢ Paint with a Satin finish, because of the built-in primer, durability, easy clean up and low VOC. This area is going to have to be pretty tough to survive my crew.

It was like painting with butter! It went on smooth and covered well.

In two coats I had the bead-board painted and ready to go around the bar.

Peppercorn added a richness to the kitchen that has been missing, and I think it looks good with the stainless and black appliances in the background. And, our barstools definitely stand out! I love it! Every time I walk in the room I stop and admire what a just a little change of color can do for a room.

Finally, after 18 months, our kitchen feels complete. Like it is here to stay and isn’t floating up, up and away.
