yarn wrapped pumpkins

Last month I was visiting my sister, and as we were up late talking I saw a little creature run across her floor! Considering how petrified I am of mice, I think I held it together pretty well. Those little critters and I don’t get along at all. Luckily for my sister and brother-in-law I was sitting in a recliner with my feet up, so I calmly said “Um there’s a mouse that just ran across your floor.” Which was very collected compared to my typical reaction of screaming while standing on a chair – just like you see in cartoons.

When I returned home I took a quickly inventory of my decorations, only to realize I have a storage container full of pest food that I use as decorations. My beautiful bundles of wheat I set out for Thanksgiving are just inviting Gus Gus and his friends inside for a little snack. But another thing I noticed were some of the real pumpkins I was using for Halloween were starting to turn soft. Which is a perfect breeding ground for fruit flies.

I love the textures that fall brings with it and created some soft and cuddly yarn wrapped pumpkins that will never turn soft, or invite little unwanted creatures into my home. After Halloween is over my quota for orange has been met with my Halloween decor.

To make yarn pumpkins you will need the following supplies:

Chunky Yarn
Styrofoam Pumpkins (which are on clearance after Halloween)
Hot Glue Gun
Scissors

These DIY Yarn Pumpkin Decorations are one of the most simple craft projects I’ve made, and would be a great project to get the kids involved in.

Many stores have foam pumpkins. I would check Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Target, Walmart, or Dollar Tree to see what shapes and sizes are available. While you’re out you can pick up yarn to use. There are so many different shades of yarn to choose from besides orange yarn. Unless orange is your color and by all means go for it.

Instructions:

Starting at the top of the pumpkin run a bead of hot glue down the grooves and wrap yarn around the pumpkin.

Once each section had been outlined, I filled it in with more hot glue and yarn by doing the same thing. Once one section is full move on to the next. Try to tuck the ends of the yarn under other strands to keep them out of sight.

To make an appealing centerpiece or to decorate a mantle you’ll want to vary the size of the pumpkins – use large and small to add variety to your arrangement. Another way to add variety to your pumpkins is to use different materials to wrap the pumpkins in. Strips of plaid fabric or jute rope would also be adorable on the pumpkins.

The blue pumpkin came with a glittered stem and I’m wishing I would have added a little glitter to the pumpkin stem of the grey guy too. If you want to add glitter, I would do it before putting on the yarn.
