Watercolor Rainbow Craft

Have a little artsy fun today and make this cute and easy watercolor rainbow craft!

I love pulling out my watercolors and I have a few tools that make it even more fun! Let’s get started making this easy and cute little watercolor rainbow craft that will look so cute on a shelf, mantel or wall for spring…and especially cute for St. Patrick’s Day!

Supplies:

12×12 blank canvas
Watercolors (I love these ones, it’s a pretty palette, a little more grown up and still affordable, but any brand will work!)
Paintbrush (OBSESSED with these, never have to rinse my brush in between colors, just a piece of scrap paper to the side.)
Molotow 4.0 mm Masking Marker
Optional: Vinyl Spatula from Weeding Kit

Let me tell you a little bit about one of my favorite little art tools. These Molotow masking markers are so much fun! You can use them on any media that you can paint. Just write, paint and peel off! I have no partnership with these people…I just love using these, and I think you will too. 🙂

Watercolor Rainbow Craft

The first thing you want to do is write on the canvas with the marker. I chose the word “Lucky” for St. Patrick’s Day. I like to either write it super large so that each letter goes from top to bottom of the canvas or write on an angle like this, so that more than one color will be masked.

The masking liquid dries pretty quick, I would only wait a couple minutes before you start painting.

Next start painting lines in the order of the color of the rainbow; red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. My lines are a little over an inch each.

When I got to the bottom I decided to leave it white and let the purple drip a bit. The yellow also dripped, but I took a baby wipe and cleaned that up a bit.

Let dry. You don’t want to wait too long, just so that you won’t smudge the paint when you start scraping.

Now you will peel off the masking liquid. You can totally just use your fingernail if you don’t mind getting a little messy. It’s watercolor, so it will come clean pretty easily.

I prefer to use the spatula out of my vinyl weeding kit. I’m sure any similar tool would work. Just gently scrape the letters so that you don’t poke through the canvas. The masking liquid will leave a little residue, but you should be able to get it off fairly easily with a paper towel or cloth. If you wait too long to peel, it can leave some of the blue in the canvas…it kind of soaks in, so don’t wait overnight or anything!

Now you can hang it, put on a shelf or have it be the centerpiece of your mantel. I also think this could be super cute in a little girls room…maybe with her name?
