A Happy Christmas Tradition {Christmas Tradition Series}
We are so excited to have Jessica from Two Shades of Pink. Are those reindeer boxes to die for or what?! Ok, if you go to her site, she has so many cute things to look at. My newest favorite are her yarn tassel trees, what a clever idea! Thanks for being here Jessica.
Our favorite Christmas tradition is probably something a lot of people do. But because I love to celebrate even the little things, we do some things to make it even more special. All year long, my two girls constantly talk about the first night during the Christmas season when we all dress in our Christmas PJ’s (mommy and daddy too), pop popcorn, make hot chocolate and drive around looking at Christmas lights while listening to Christmas carols. Every year it feels magical!
So what I do to make it a bit more fun is decorate a bag or box for treats with a Christmas theme. This year, I bought my girls red and white pajamas with reindeer on them so I made cute reindeer boxes for our Christmas lights outing (kraft paper takeout boxes are from Michael’s). I just hot glued some googly eyes and made a red yarn pom pom nose. The antlers are pipe cleaners bent to look like antlers.
I line the boxes with red and white striped waxed food paper that you can find at Michael’s in their gift wrap section. When I put the popcorn in, I usually throw some treats in there like Hershey kisses or mini candy canes so as they eat eat the popcorn in the dark car, they will find fun and yummy treats as a little surprise.
Then we spend a couple hours just oohing and ahhing over pretty lights, listening to Christmas carols, and sipping our hot chocolate (with the AC on full blast pretending its cold because we live in Florida) and enjoying our family tradition each year.
I hope you enjoyed our little tradition that gives me an awesome excuse to craft a little. Other years I have made white bags made into a snowman or wrapped a takeout box like a gift. You can go simple and just let the kids decorate their bag with stickers and drawings to make their own fun.

Christmas has always been a family celebration in the Grinkmeyer home, but as our children grew older we found that their interest in Christmas morning waned and the sparkle in their eyes was gone. The day after Thanksgiving, 1992, we introduced the Christmas Web in our home with the placement of Magic Wands into their socks that had for years been hung at the fireplace mantel. Attached to each Magic Wand was a piece of yarn (a 70 yard piece of yarn). When our two teen-aged children came down Christmas morning, they found that the yarn was wound through the house – around window latches, door knobs, chairs and doors. It ended in a closet or cabinet which held their special Christmas gift from one of Santa’s elves, an elf who had been looking out for them for the past year and knew of their desire for this special Christmas gift.
The Christmas Web continued as each of our children got married and as they had children. Each of our grandchildren have an Elf on the Shelf or Elf Magic elf who is now the elf that hides their special Christmas gift each year and leads them to it with their individual Magic Wand. We now have seven Magic Wands each with 70 yards of yarn winding through our house every Christmas morning, making getting a cup of coffee an acrobatic achievement before the winding hunt begins.
The Christmas Web has become a highly anticipated family tradition for our children, grandchildren and us. We hope it brings as much joy to your family as it has to ours.
