Adorable Felt Valentine Envelopes Kids Will Treasure (With Free Love Mail Printable!)

Valentine’s Day always feels like a bright, happy pause between Christmas and spring. January can feel long, cold, and gray. That is exactly why we love adding cheerful Valentine traditions to our family calendar.

Felt Valentine Envelopes

At our house, Valentine’s Day is not only about romance. Instead, it is about celebrating love with our kids in simple, meaningful ways. Over the years, we have played Valentine Bingo, shared pink dinners, and made sweet cupcakes with treat toppers together. Each activity adds excitement and connection during the winter months.

This year, we wanted a fun craft project that could become a tradition. That is when we discovered the idea of a felt Valentine envelope. These adorable felt envelopes are perfect for holding notes, goodies, and surprises. Even better, they can be reused every Valentine’s Day.

We also included a free printable love mail to tuck inside each envelope. It is a simple way to share kind words and sweet handwritten notes with kids of any age.

Let’s walk through this DIY step by step.

Felt Valentine Envelopes

Why Felt Valentine Envelopes Are a Must-Make

First, felt envelopes are durable and soft. They feel special and handmade.
Second, they are inexpensive and easy to customize.
Third, kids love receiving mail made just for them.

This project works well for many kids’ ages. You can help younger kids while older kids complete most steps independently. Either way, everyone has much fun creating something meaningful.

Most importantly, these envelopes encourage connection. A sweet handwritten note can mean everything to a child.

I LOVE IT! It came together easily and inexpensively—I’m talking under $5 for sure! You could even make these with your kids’ help (especially if you use regular glue instead of hot glue).

I’ll tell you how I made my felt Valentine envelope without the Pottery Barn Kids pricetag. 🙂 Peeps, this is a no sew project! If you can cut with scissors, use a glue gun and a ruler then you are set. It really is very simple with an adorable outcome!

Supplies Needed for Felt Valentine Envelopes

Before starting, gather your materials. You can find most of these supplies at any craft store.

You may also use sewing stitches instead of glue if desired. However, this tutorial works perfectly as a no-sew project.

Felt Valentine Envelopes

Step 1: Cut the Felt Pieces

Start by selecting felt colors that fit your Valentine theme. Red, pink, and white are always classic choices. However, you can mix in any colors you love.

Cut one piece of felt measuring 9 x 12 inches. This will become the front of the envelope.
Next, cut another piece measuring 12 x 18 inches. This will form the back and flap.

Using a pencil, lightly mark your measurements. Then, cut carefully with scissors or pinking shears.

Step 2: Create the Envelope Opening

Now, shape the front of the envelope. This step helps kids easily grab their goodies.

Use a round object to trace a half circle near the top. A dinner plate works perfectly. Cut along the line to create a smooth opening.

Set this piece aside for now.

Step 3: Shape the Flap

Next, work on the larger felt piece. Fold it in half lengthwise. Scoring lightly with a ruler helps create clean folds.

Mark the center at the top edge. Then, measure about one and a half inches downward. Connect angled lines from that point to each side.

Cut along the lines to create a triangular flap. This flap gives the felt envelope its classic shape.

Here are the two pieces that make up the envelope: the back piece with the envelope flap, and the front piece with the half-circle.

Step 4: Add Decorative Stitching (Optional)

At this point, you can keep things simple. Glue the pieces together and decorate later. Just hot glue (or sew) ric-rac, ribbon, lace or any trim you like along the edges of the envelope, and add hearts cut from scrap pieces of felt. That is what I did for these 3 envelopes! These were done in no time, I kept them very simple and sweet!

However, stitching adds beautiful detail.

Thread embroidery floss through a needle. Use basic stitches around the edges of the felt pieces. Running stitches or blanket stitches work well.

This step takes time, but the result is worth it. The stitches add charm and texture to the felt envelope.

Step 5: Add Embellishments

Now comes the fun part. Decorate the envelope before assembling.

Cut scalloped edges from contrasting felt. Glue them along the flap and front opening. Add hearts, ribbons, or fabric trims.

This is a great step for kids. They love choosing embellishments and placing them creatively.

Encourage creativity and personal expression. Each envelope should feel unique and special.

Step 6: Assemble the Felt Envelope

Once decorated, it is time to assemble. Place the front piece on top of the back piece. Align edges carefully.

Apply hot glue or tacky glue along the sides and bottom. Leave the top open to create the envelope pocket. Press firmly and let dry completely.

Attach Velcro under the flap to keep the envelope closed.

Step 7: Add a Hanging Ribbon

Cut a piece of ribbon to your desired length. Glue it to the back of the envelope.

These envelopes look adorable hanging on doors. They also work well on hooks or wall pegs. Hanging envelopes add excitement each day.

It would be fun to let your kids decorate their own envelopes, or you could add fabric rosettes, monograms, or even your child’s name with embroidery or heat transfer paper. Oh the possibilities! I think later on I will add my kids’ initials or names to personalize their envelopes.

Here is a closeup of the one I cut out with pinking shears, to create a fun decorative edge.

Free Printable Love Mail Cards

Now let’s talk about the freebie. The printable love mail cards make this project extra special.

Each sheet includes four cards. They measure 3.5 x 5 inches. Print on white cardstock for best results.

Write your child’s name on the front. Add a sweet handwritten note on the back. Slip the card inside the felt envelope.

You can add notes daily leading up to Valentine’s Day. This creates a new tradition kids will love.

Why Kids Love This Craft Project

Kids love crafts that feel grown-up. Using felt, scissors, and glue feels exciting. They also love creating something functional.

This project builds fine motor skills. It also encourages creativity and patience. Plus, kids feel proud using something they made.

Tips for Crafting With Kids

  • Pre-cut felt for younger kids
  • Smaller size of felt for kids.
  • Use tacky glue instead of hot glue when needed

    1. I made these a few years back. I would say the sewing part takes a while, although very cute. But I’ll be making them again, but doing a different approach. I’m creating the stitches by using a thin tip paint pen marker. See how that goes. It’ll give it the same look but less time consuming.

I thought I’d make them for my sons first Valentine’s Day party at school (he’s almost 2) and after making the first one, I realized I probably should’ve looked into it further before agreeing.
