Spy Decoder Wheel

You can be a spy and make your very own Spy Decoder Wheel. Here are all the details on this fun and sneaky craft for kids.

Ella and Annie had so much fun creating the top secret detective kit for Spy Week that we thought we’d show you how to make your very own decoder wheel to create secret messages only you hold the key to decode! If you don’t have card stock paper, try using white paper plates.

Here is what you need:

  • White Paper Plates
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Ruler
  • Brad
  • Spy Decoder Wheels Template (download below)

Print out the Spy Decoder template on white paper or cardstock and cut out the three circles.

Take the large and medium circle, place together and using the brad, poke a whole through the center.

Use markers to color the wheel. Write the alphabet with a black marker or sharpie around the outer circle.

On the inner circle write numbers. In the blank spots on the outer rim we added a heart. Feel free to add any shape or picture you want!

Once you have the wheel colored and decorated the way you want it, take it apart and add the third (smallest) circle to the center. Stick the brad through the center to secure all three circles together.

Now it is time to create some messages for your partner in crime! You decide on the key, for instance, ours was ❤️4. When the decoder is aligned to ❤️4, then all the messages can be decoded.

Look at the number then match it up with the letter on the wheel.

  1. Hi. I wanted to inform you that the link to the decoder template must be broken or spammed. It somehow lead me to a pornographic site. I know this is not your intention so I wanted you to be aware asap. I am thankful my 3 small boys were not with me when this happened. And I’m just hoping it didn’t threaten my laptop. yikes!

    1. Oh my goodness! I just checked and you’re right! Thanks for letting us know. I pulled all the links and will get it fixed asap.
