I’m so excited to share this post!!! I have been wanting to BUY summer shorts for Q, my 5 year-old daughter and have also wanted to MAKE some. It dawned on me a couple of days ago that I already had all the materials I needed and that there was a WAY easy way to remedy that. I made 8 pair in about 10 minutes.

What you’ll need to make your the EASIEST No-Sew Summer Shorts from Leggings:

  • Old leggings with holes in the knees. We know you have them.
  • A pair of nice scissors. (This is an affiliate link. If you purchase through this link it won’t cost you anymore, but we may earn a small percentage off your purchase.)

STEP 1:

Find all the leggings you have that are either DIRTY or that have HOLES in them. Most of Q’s were in one or both of those categories. I was about to throw them out until I had this idea.

STEP 2:

Start cutting! I used my sharp material scissors and matched up the two legs and went to town cutting each leg off right above where the stain or rip was.

STEP 3:

Feel so happy that you are getting rid of all those stained and ripped parts of the legging. Q had fun cutting these pieces up.

TA DAH!! Not done yet. I was just about to run downstairs and sew these unfinished edges, which you could also do, instead I remembered that knit can be stretched and it rolls up on its own.

STEP 4:

This was so easy that Q could do it and it’s always fun to get her involved. She loves it. All you do is stretch the pant leg (like below) a couple of times and naturally the pant leg will roll just enough to make it look like it was on purpose.

STEP 5:

Find ALL the ripped leggings and make a whole new wardrobe of comfortable Summer shorts.

She loves them and she really had a great time helping. Sometimes I’ll catch her telling her friends that she made something. I love that she loves this. And look at those adorable  dimples in her knuckles…I love her so much.

  1. Thanks for this. My daughter loves wearing dresses but plays hard. I’ve been buying her seperate bike shorts for underneath. I’m going to pull out all her old short leggings and do this. Great tip!

  2. Thanks so much for sharing your idea. I’ve sewed my son’s too short and holey pants into shorts, but never thought of it for my girls. I just did this with a pair of my older daughter’s capris and cut them into shorts for my younger daughter. I love that I didn’t have to sew anything! Next week I’ll get around to posting this on my blog and will be sure to link back to you. Thanks again!

  3. I also do this with longsleeve shirts, often the sleeves get too short while the shirt still fits! I cut them off and stretch them a bit.

  4. You can also use the bottom of the leg as a pouch. Just sew closed the part you cut and you have a little bag that is already hemmed 🙂

  5. I may be a few years late coming across your post but better late than never! What a smart idea! Thanks so much for sharing!
