How to Make Moon Phases Cookie Pops
There are so many Eric Carle books we adore but one of our very favorites is Papa, Please Get the Moon For Me.
Marissa here from Rae Gun Ramblings where I blog about all thing crafty, delicious, and bookish. And it just so happens that today’s project hits on all three of those. Let me first say that my son Teddy is CRAZY about the moon so when I learned that Erica Carle had a book all about the moon and it’s phases I was so excited.
It has since become one of our family’s very favorite books. It get’s read almost every day. The story is about a little girl who asks her father to bring her the moon to play with. Part of the adventure involves watching the moon get smaller and bigger as it goes through it’s phases. So today I’m sharing a super easy Moon Phase Cookie Pops recipe.
My Teddy loved making these treats with me of course he had to wear his DIY Moon Phases Shirt. See moon obsessed I told you!
What You Need
I used a small batch rice krispies treat recipe which makes 5 small portions since you know self control is way easier if there aren’t a ton of extra treats all the time. But if you want to make a lot of them or have your own favorite recipe by all means do that.
- 1 C Rice Krispies
- 1 C Mini Marshmallows
- 1 TBS Butter
- 5 Lollipop Sticks
- Wax Paper
- 1/2 C White Chocolate Chips
- Black Food Coloring
What to Do
- Melt butter and marshmallows over medium heat.
- Once melted remove from heat and stir in rice krispies.
- Quickly turn onto wax paper.
- Allow to cool for about 1 minute, just so you can handle it comfortably. Form into balls around the sticks.
- Allow to cool fully.
- Melt the white chocolate in a microwave proof bowl starting with 30 seconds. Stir. Zap for another 10 seconds and stir and repeat until chocolate is 80% melted. Stir to finish melting.
- Fully cover one ball in white chocolate for your full moon. The bumpiness of the cereal helps it get the moon crater look.
- Remove 1 heaping spoonful of melted chocolate into another bowl.
- Into the remaining chocolate add some black food coloring. I just do a small amount so that it looks purplish gray.
- Cover another ball fully to make your new moon.
- Next cover the balls partially with white and gray to get the different phases. I found it easier to do the gray first.
- Rest them on the wax paper and allow to cool completely and harden before serving.
So cute and easy right? Your little ones will love helping you make this fun treat after you read the book together. And they will love eating it even more!
