The History of Halloween

Halloween has been celebrated for centuries, and it all started long before candy corn and pumpkin spice everything! The holiday traces its roots back to an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain, marking the end of the harvest season. People believed that on the night of October 31st, the boundary between the living and the dead blurred — letting ghosts walk among us!

To keep away those wandering spirits, people lit lanterns, wore costumes, and carved scary faces into turnips or pumpkins to frighten away any mischief. Later, when Christianity spread, the holiday blended with All Saints’ Day (or All Hallows’ Day) on November 1st, creating what we now call All Hallows’ Eve — which eventually became Halloween!

Isn’t it fascinating how this ancient celebration evolved into the family-friendly night we love today, filled with costumestreats, and a little spooky fun?

Trick-or-Treating: From Cakes to Candy

The tradition of trick-or-treating started long before modern-day Halloween candy took over store shelves. Hundreds of years ago, on All Hallows Eve, poor villagers would go door to door asking for “soul cakes” — small round cakes baked to honor the dead. In return, they’d promise to pray for the souls of the homeowner’s loved ones.

As time went on, children took over the practice, turning it into a fun game of treating (or sometimes “tricking”!) their neighbors. When the holiday came to America, the treats evolved — and now candy cornchocolate, and Reese’s have replaced those humble little cakes.

Can we all agree that Reeses Peanut Butter Cups cups might just be the best Halloween candy ever?

Halloween Symbols and Superstitions

Halloween wouldn’t be the same without its mix of spooky and silly symbols — but do you know what they all mean? Here are some fun explanations behind the icons we see every year:

  • Black cats are said to bring bad luck, but in some legends, they were once thought to be witches’ companions or even witches in disguise!
  • The color orange represents the harvest, warmth, and autumn leaves — making it the perfect hue for October celebrations.
  • Witches are one of the oldest Halloween figures, inspired by stories of wise women and folklore.
  • Ghosts are tied to the ancient idea that spirits visit the living during the night of October 31st.

We love how these old traditions still weave their way into our Halloween decorations, crafts, and costumes today. Whether your child wants to be a spooky ghost or a friendly witch, there’s something magical about dressing up and stepping into a different world for a night.
