Step 1: Prepare the Paper Plate
Download the Free Christmas Tree Printable below and print out onto card stock. Cut out the template and trace onto the back of the white paper plate.
Using a sharp pencil, or craft tool, to poke holes in the paper plate. Make sure it doesn’t tear. Children may need help with this.
Try to get the holes evenly spaced and not too close together. This step strengthens fine motor skills while keeping the project manageable.
Step 2: Thread the Yarn
Thread some green yarn through a lacing needle and run through one of the holes. Pull through and then tape the end to the back of the plate to secure. Knots will pull through.
Kids love using real tools, and this needle is ideal for beginners. It helps them learn sewing skills in a safe and fun way.
Guide kids as they push the needle through the holes. They can sew in any direction they like. Encourage crisscross patterns, straight lines, or zigzags. These patterns help them practice coordination and focus. Every tree turns out unique.
Step 3: Fill in the Christmas Tree
Continue sewing until the yarn fills most of the tree shape. The kids can add more yarn if needed. The more random the stitches, the more charming the tree looks. This step gives kids creative freedom while building confidence.
