Building an Emergency Kit

Building an emergency kit ensures that you will have the necessary items, food, and first aid needs covered at any time.

Of course, you can always pick up a Pre-Made Emergency Kit, and although that is very convenient it probably won’t cover the needs of everyone in your household. Making your own kit gives you the opportunity to add anything extra that may be needed.

First, you will need a waterproof duffle bag to keep all of your supplies in an easy to go, waterproof bag.

Now let’s go through the necessary items that can come in handy during an emergency situation.

First Aid Kit: Having a first aid kit is a crucial piece of your emergency kit. This one has it all from bandages, ointment, ice packs, and more. The one thing I would add to this kit is an incredible product called Wound Seal.
Flashlights: During emergencies, electricity is not a reliable resource to depend on. I like these because they are waterproof.
Batteries: You will need to keep fresh batteries on hand for flashlights and any other devices.
Safety Dust Masks: If you have family members who are sensitive to the environment, keeping a box of these in your emergency kit can be a lifesaver.
Water: The question is, how much water should you store? The rule of thumb to follow is 1 gallon per person, per day. I would suggest at least a 3 day supply for each person in the household, but to play it safe you probably want to plan on a week’s worth of water for everyone.
Water Filter Straw: This handy device turns undrinkable water into safe drinking water. Great to have as a backup in case your water supply gets low.
Camping & Cooking Mess Kit: Keep this cooking set on hand to use when preparing and cooking meals.
Chef’s Banquet Emergency Food Supply: Use this tub of emergency food supply to feed one person in your household for 30 days.
Trash Bags: You can use these several different ways during an emergency including personal sanitation for when the plumbing is out of service.
Duct Tape: Because a roll of this stuff always comes in handy.
Power Bank: If you keep this power bank charged regularly, it can help keep your devices charged.
Manual Can Opener: Opening canned foods can be next to impossible without a can opener. Keeping a manual one on hand is a good idea because you don’t have to use electricity to power the can opener.
Wet Ones: Without running water it can be difficult to keep hands and faces clean. These wipes come in handy for a quick clean up without the hassle.
Tool Kit: Keep this set on hand just in case you need a tool to help you turn off any utilities or for any other issue that could arise.
Fire Extinguisher: If your water is shut off during an emergency, putting a fire out can become a scary situation. Keep these fire extinguishers in your emergency kit to avoid any more issues.
Sleeping Bags: During an emergency, chances are you won’t be able to snuggle up in your own bed at night. Keeping sleeping bags on hand for every member of the family helps give them a chance to catch some zzz’s.
Pet Food: Make sure you have everything you need to keep your pets fed and watered.
